Here is the story of how the vast portion of my driving motivation to someday be paid for my coding prowess (i.e. a professional coder) is a phone convo from over a yr ago
#100DaysOfCode
Backstory ...
May 20, 2019 my prev employer suddenly closed their doors
We walked into those doors that morning thinking it would be a typical Mon, only to learn at closing that we would never walk thru those doors again
There I was, 2 Associate degrees in engineering tech (so not full blown engineering degrees, least not to HR depts) with 3 yrs exp in a niche industry
But! I had slowly been learning #PowerShell to automate many aspects of my job (and some other people's 😆)
So I start perusing Indeed and LinkedIn for entry level coding jobs
But every listing seemed to req at least a 4 yr degree or equiv work exp
&& HR is unlikely to see how my niche exp relates to their biz
Regretfully I did not utilize cover letters as I should have 😔
However, i did not let that 4 yr req completely deter me
So I applied to a couple coding positions
Lo and behold! I get a call 😁
Only to learn that it was a thx but no thx call 😔
They wanted someone who could day 0 walk thru their doors and be productive
The man was even SO kind as to say that they test any potential job applicants and how I probably would not even be able to pass such a test
😶 say what?!!?
You've never met me, nor looked over my portfolio (truth be told, I had no portfolio as it was all on my work comp)
Needless to say that talks never progressed past that brief dismissing phone call
That brush off, though, has ignited an inferno inside me to prove him (and his comp) wrong!
To prove that one of their biggest mistakes was not bringing me on board
That it was a mistake on their part as I have dev-ed various scripts to automate routine mundane tasks
Ex: turning a manual 1min task into the 1sec task req to click a btn and have my PC execute
And I have bucket loads of such time savers
Oh! You want those numbers crunched about the man hours I have been able to save thru my coding #PowerShell automation, I would happily run those for you
But you're prob right Mr. HR Man on the phone, I could never pass your entry level test to your comp
Bitterness aside, GOD truly works in mysterious ways and here I am today, over a yr after that terrifying day of being let go ...
- Employed by a neighboring comp of my prev comp
- SIGNIFICANT pay raise
- WFH since June 2019
- About to earn my BS in #Mathematics
Many and much thx to y'all that have read my little story 😁
I write this both ...
As a reminder to myself to keep pursuing my dream of being a professional coder
&& to spread awareness that slips of cheap paper are NOT accurate assessments of a person's talent and skill
If you found this entertaining or agree with my sentiments,
Pls RT for reach! 😎
