Welcome to the #EnvironmentalCampaign archives.

This story is about the Hands off Point Peron @pointperon campaign against the proposed Mangles Bay marina development in Point Peron near Rockingham, Western Australia.
The campaign began in 2003, although efforts had been made from 1964 when Point (Cape) Peron was transferred from the Commonwealth to the State to be used for recreation/park lands.

The Commonwealth confirmed in 1968 that the land must not be used for private development.
In 2000 much of the land was classified as #Bushforever by the WA government.

However, in 2005 Landcorp proposed a residential and tourist marina including 500 boat pens, chalet-style accommodation and an entertainment precinct.
The public was outraged. Constant dredging would be required to keep the Mega-canal marina from silting up. It was predicted to also have effects on #sanderosion, loss of #seagrass, algal growth and changes to #waterquality.
Hands off Point Peron (HOPP) @pointperon lobbied politicians intensely and rallied outside Monthly council meetings. Local filmmaker Samuel Young produced this stunning video to help create awareness of the threat.
A previous proposal raised in 1993 had been found by the EPA to be environmentally unfriendly. It gave this advice again in 1998.

Despite EPA findings & community opposition, the State Government announced in 2009 that it would progress the marina with a private partner.
Activists blanketed the #Rockingham region with tens of thousands of information flyers for over 10 years.

They organized ongoing petitions with thousands of signatures, protests, public meetings, rallies and numerous media attracting activities.
The Friends of Point Peron (FOPP) group also researched, lobbied and wrote submissions to various levels of government, despite losing each battle.

Yet the Mangles Bay Marina proposal was granted both Federal and State Environmental approval in 2014.
In mid 2016 FOPP supporters appeared before the WA Planning Commission after nearly 500 sent in written submissions.

The amendment was submitted to @theWAPC to consolidate the zoning to allow the development to go ahead.
The WAPC recommended the amendment be declined based on the project’s numerous fatal flaws and breaches of State Planning Policies.

In 2018 Minister Saffioti accepted this recommendation.
Now @pointperon campaigns to ensure the point becomes an A Class reserve, as was always required by the original transfer terms. Dedication, diligence and dogged perseverance by activists for over 10 years has resulted in the protection of this unique site for all to enjoy.
