Why did #methane surge in 2020 ?

Our article just published @Nature shows that the high growth rate of CH4 in 2020 is explained half by decreased OH removal & half by more wetland emissions @ShushiPeng @CEA_Officiel @gcarbonproject @IPSL_outreach … 🧶

nature.com/articles/s4158… Image
We expected in 2020 less anthropogenic emissions from #COVID but in fact the #CH4 growth rate was record high at 15.1 ppt y-1 (@NOAA data ) Image
The #CH4 growth rate results from an imbalance between emissions ( natural and anthropogenic ) and the OH sink in the atmosphere @gcarbonproject Image

While the Tiger Range Countries (TRCs) have put in efforts to revive and stabilize the big cat's population, an urgent need for finance to ensure the protection of priority tiger protected areas (PAs) in TRCs is necessary, say @Dr_RajeshGopal & @wilder_mk.

Thread/ #Wetlands may seem off-topic for an organisation based in #Africa's #drylands, but the protection & restoration of river ecosystems makes up a big part of our programmes at Tree Aid

Learn more this #WorldWetlandsDay 👇
2/When it does rain in the #Sahel, it often pours, leading to destructive flash floods, riverbank damage & #soilerosion. #Siltation is a major problem in the Sahel too, making rivers dry up quicker in the dry season, and flood faster in the rainy season too

#WorldWetlandsDay
3/ Our riverine projects work with local communities to restore & protect existing #trees along river banks, and adapt #farming methods to reduce siltation

Rivers & streams are a lifeline for these areas, and provide vital many services - read on to learn what we've been doing👇

Not a rocket science. Today is #WorldWetlandsDay.
#Wetlands provide many ecosystem services.

- They replenish the ground water
- Provide habitat to numerous species. From smaller to large predators. It’s their home.

Below is a long-ish thread🧵for some context to this amazing meme from @DrArialShogren and @thats_me_del_p.

TL;DR -- Our words matter. They shape and bias our understanding of the systems we study.

[1/n]
First -- I'm blessed to have great colleagues @UaDeptBSC who put up with my shenanigans.

This conversation started with me giving @thats_me_del_p a hard time about a small grant proposal. The title mentioned "drivers of intermittence."

[2/n] Image
I'm not a big fan of umbrella terms like #sustainability, #connectivity, and now #intermittence.

In #interdisciplinary teams, negotiating a common language is difficult. I actually think its often MORE difficult when we share common terms with slightly diverging definitions

2/5 #CWTC21
To understand 🦇#behaviour during ❄️we used #batacoustics and weather information in #wetlands, #ricepaddies, 🌆 areas, & #saltmarshes from one of the biggest Deltas in Western Europe (Ebro Delta). @PDE @parcscat @govern @HumedalesDelta @ecologistescat @FBiodiversidad

Results:
1- The most recorded #batspecies was #pipistrelluspygmaeus
2- 🦇were active during the 83% of our total recorded nights (469) mainly using #wetlands & 🌆areas
3- We found a threshold value that triggered #batarousals ->11ºC during❄️nights

President @JoeBiden is visiting NY and NJ today to talk about #infrastructure in the wake of flooding. Talk that includes more $ for sea walls, levees, stormwater drains. But to solve flooding, we have to consider how #water behaves.
It can come from the sky, from the sea, and even from up from underground due to hydrological pressure. #ClimateCrisis is showing us a quantity of water our #infrastructure is not built to handle. B/c our concrete water infrastructure is inflexible.
Will @JoeBiden talk about natural #infrastructure? #wetlands, floodplains, and marshes are absorbent and flexible -- and also STORE CARBON to reduce climate change. Yet cities including NYC are building new development on filled-in wetlands.

We've lost >30% of #wetlands worldwide, ecosystems that provide us essential #ecosystemservices. What do we know about the relation between this #threatenedhabitat and 🦇? Detecting gaps in our current knowledge will help upcoming needs for #batconservation.
#WBTC2 #Con2 (2/5)
I reviewed 116 scientific publications to reveal #knowledgegaps. Bat-wetlands studies have barely increase since 1900, mainly focused on species inventory and habitat use, leaving key topics like #pollution #habitatfragmentation #batmigration poorly studied
#WBTC2 #Con2 (3/5)
Mostly of the studies have been carried out on #developedcountries leaving some large areas of wetlands poorly explored. In order to help #landmanagers and #policymakers we provide a new method to identify high priorities areas of study: Bat Knowledge Index

Eco-restoration of Thazhambur Wetland

"Very often we find that passion determines eco-restoration programmes, but what is also important is the science of it" (1/n)

#wetlands #chennai #restoration
With support from Hinduja Foundation, we embarked on a project to restore and conserve the Thazhambur #wetland and foster responsible use and management of #water resources by local communities on the principles of reduce, reuse and recycle (2/n)
Eco-restoration efforts has resulted in the total recovery and restoration of 30.6 ha of water spread area, consolidation of 1.2 km of the tank bund and increasing wetland holding capacity by 5.3 million c ft of water over 16.46 million c ft existing capacity.

[1] Reports indicate that the #Venezuelan Floating Storage/Production Vessel, FSO #nabarima, currently located in the #gulfofparia, has approximately 1.2 million barrels of crude oil onboard & the vessel is in distress.

Why is this of concern to #TrinidadandTobago?
[2] The #gulfofparia is a semi-enclosed body of water located between #Trinidad and #Venezuela. The #marine #environment is a very dynamic system. Any oil that is spilled in the #gulfofparia will likely be transported by the currents and reach the shores of both countries.

One of the attractions of the San Joaquin Marsh is an island in the middle of one of the ponds that is covered with White Pelicans and Double Crested Cormorants. I have a confession about the cormorants: I have...
...never been close enough or had a powerful enough lens to see the tiny wisps of hair that constitute the "crests" on these birds. There are those who doubt that they exist. As far as I know there are only a handful of photos showing the crests...
...and even they are not impressive. The best practice is to assume that any cormorant that you see in the San Joaquin Marsh is a Double Crested and check it of your life list as one. I get many questions about the cormorants...
