I graduated with a second class lower/third class from a university, or I have HND from a Polytechnic and I am interested in taking up a Master's degree in Canada. What can I do?
This is your #thread.

You have a 2:1/1:1, no problem but remember to RT this for others to see.

First, Canadian institutions do not use the terminology "second class lower", "third class" and so on. The equivalent you'll find here is in percentage. I have attached an image from @umanitoba (one of the schools with the lowest percentage cut off) explaining this breakdown.

Canadian Institutions do not accept HND or Third Class for masters directly, but you can apply for a PGD, or a Certification Program. You can also do a credit transfer as an HND holder or 3rd Class Bsc. Although your visa chances are slimmer if you want to transfer into a...

BSc program in Canada while coming from a BSc program. So your best bet is a PGD or one of the post degree certificate programs.
Option 1. Apply for and complete a PGD in Nigeria, before applying for a Master's program in Canada.
Option 2. Apply directly for a PGD in Canada.

For those with a 2:2, note that not all Canadian Universities are Gpa-centric. Your internship/work experiences, notable extra curricular activities & academic publications count a great deal. A strong SOP (Statement of Purpose) clearly expressing your interest in pursuing

the particular program in that university is equally important. A Strong LOR (Letter of Recommendation) from your ex-lecturers/employers is another factor, it helps a great deal if you come highly recommended. Standardised tests (GRE, GMAT, IELTS) also increase your chances.

Also, Canadian universities put emphasis on your last 2 years as an undergrad. So if you did brilliantly well in your last 2/3 years as an undergrad, but didn't make 2:1 because your first two years were poor, make sure you explain this clearly in your SOP.

60% in your undergraduate degree is the minimum requirement for most Canadian Universities. I know someone who got into University of Manitoba with 55%. So go through the university websites & search for country specific requirements to get an exact picture of what you need.

Sort programs in your preferred universities in the order of preference. Maximize your chances by applying to as many universities as possible. Try to connect with students or those who have graduated and openly ask your questions on SM after doing your due diligence.

Finally, in Canada there are different types of universities, top(UBC, McGill and University of Toronto), and you'll find not highly ranked unis like Memorial University Newfoundland, York university...
Always go for the low ranked ones, you have a 2:2/third class remember?

And then you have the SPP colleges: Humber college, Cambrian college etc.
For the SPP colleges, you can apply with minimum of 55% from your undergrad, whereas for the top universities it can be as high as 85%.

Just give it a shot and stay positive, your dreams are valid!
