@NMS_Kenya @InteriorKE You heard of the Lebanon kaboom ? Now think Nairobi & a simpler issue of unsafe use of LPG at small commercial & industrial bulk installations ? Thread.. @chothep @BasilioCC @RasnaWarah @ajfactual52 @johnnjenga @SimbaTirima @VictorMwambacha @Engnr_Karimi1
When the risks are properly identified & managed, LPG can be safely used as a fuel source for many applications. But being the Mungu saidia proponents we are top down. How safe is Nairobi, especially with corrupted systems at City Hall & the Safety Directorate ? @alaminkimathi
In the vast majority of cases bulk LPG tanks are service owned by companies that supply the gas, but do they look after the tanks & fittings (their integrity & maintenance) or as legally enshrined the County Fire Service to ensure they are maintained in a safe condition ?
The user of the LPG (ie the person operating the site) has responsibilities in relation to the tank including:
• Siting of the tank
• Ventilation & conditions around the tank
• Tanker access
• Security
• Impact protection
• Emergency arrangements
But is there oversight?
In case @NMS_Kenya is unaware, annual fire inspections for licensing purposes are a gravy train for the County Fire Inspectors. That said, once bribed to tick the boxes & over look the risks & hazards those tanks pose. Integrity aside, how safe does that make Nairobi? @SimbaTirima
One of the most dangerous phenomenas were such a tank to catch fire, is the Ngai Ndeithya aspect or what we call a Boiling Liquid Expansion Vapour Explosion-BLEVE. Every firefighter's Waterloo or nightmare if you may. @siambiliki @NgangaWaNgangan @Nairobi_News @NairobiJiji
With the high end hotels dotting the CBD, each housing one such tank. Imagine a fire on, say (God forbid) the Stanley & a BLEVE which occurs when pressurized liquid inside a vessel, such as the tank, reaches temperatures higher than that liquid's boiling point & kabooms ?
Where do we start, since the Kaboom would contain fires left, right & centre setting off secondary ones. As well hot fragments from the blast ? No even mentioning our poor prep'dness & poor response capabilities, or the unaware civilians that end up complicating response efforts.
Impact protection demands that if possible, such tank (and its associated piping) not be located in areas where
they can cause harm. However, where this is not possible, then protection must be done. Security fence or the Intercontinental Hotel way provides this protection how?
Long story short, there are several time bombs waiting to explode within Nairobi CBD & @NMS_Kenya is legally complacent as it stands. So what are you going to do about it ? @Anon1KENYA @SaveLivesKenya @Ma3Route @karingithiii @WanjikuRevolt @BettieWaShiro @threadreaderapp unroll
