"OK so you have a UK economic recovery tracker, but what about all the other countries?", I hear you ask.

Well, allow me to introduce our Global Economic Recovery Tracker 🎉

Here’s a thread on the main insights at this stage:
First, jobs:

As lockdowns in many regions ease, we’re starting to see job vacancies climb out of their deep April-May troughs, but hiring is still way down pretty much everywhere.

Openings in the UK & Spain still >50% down year-on-year, according to the data from @indeed.
Next, activity in workplaces:

Right across the world, we’re seeing the return to offices stop short. No location has as many people in their usual place of work now as it normally would.

This hints at a permanent shift: will that last 10-20% ever go back to the daily commute?
Next, consumer activity:

Here we’re using Google’s data on footfall in retail & entertainment spots (shops, cafés, bars etc)

Some countries back to normal, others very much not. India’s prolonged lockdown suppressing most activity, UK among slowest recoveries though quickening.
Here’s retail footfall, via @Springboard_.

No country back to normal, most stagnating.

Note: US retail footfall is down but other leisure footfall up (previous tweet). Suggests people opting out of retail to buy online, but other leisure experiences lack digital substitutes.
Sticking with leisure, how are cinemas doing?

Some countries like Japan & Norway seeing recoveries, but most seeing very little.

People are justifiably anxious about sitting in a crowded indoor space for a couple of hours; movie theatre industry could be in for a tough period.
How about travel & tourism?

First, signs from @huq_industries that Europe’s Covid resurgence is hitting tourism hard.

For a hot second, Spain’s tourist numbers had recovered to normal, but with cases rising and restrictions reimposed they’re back down

Double-dips everywhere.
Then we have numbers from @Transparent_VR, showing that the double-dip extends beyond Europe, though it’s more muted elsewhere.

Signs that resurgences of recent weeks are making travellers more cautious right across the globe.
And last but not least, what does all of this mean for the environment?

Lockdowns shuttered factories, leaving marked impacts on pollution, but right across the board we’re seeing emissions recovery rapidly. Many locations now producing more pollution than before lockdown.
That concludes today’s roundup of realtime economic data from around the world, but keep checking back to the page for regular updates and new indicators ft.com/content/272354…
