We have huge plans for 2021 — DC statehood, democracy reform, immigration reform, and so much more.

But the truth is, win or lose in November, none of these things will be possible if we don't abolish the filibuster. And here's why. Thread ⬇️ (1/x)
It’s no secret that Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans will use every trick in the book to obstruct progressive policymaking — and the filibuster is a perfect example.

With the filibuster rule, Republicans need just 41 Senators to stop a bill from reaching a vote. (2/x)
That means that Republicans can tank our entire legislative agenda in the Senate even if they’re in the minority. As long as they can keep 41 members in line to run out the clock, they can obstruct just about everything. (3/x)
Mitch McConnell will tell you that upholding the filibuster is a crucial part of Senate tradition. But he doesn’t really care about tradition. He cares about his power. And he knows that keeping the filibuster would give him extraordinary power in a Democratic Senate. (4/x)
And if Mitch McConnell wants to talk about tradition, he should start by talking about the deeply problematic history of the filibuster.

Fun fact: The longest filibuster lasted over 24 hours and was an attempt to block the Civil Rights Act of 1957. (5/x) theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…
Time and time again, the filibuster has been used to obstruct civil rights legislation and progress. At John Lewis’s funeral last week, @BarackObama called the filibuster a “Jim Crow relic” — and he's right. (6/x) vox.com/2020/7/30/2134…
.@JoeBiden has signaled he'd support ending the filibuster if Republicans continue with their obstructionism. As a former Senator and VP, he knows the consequences of the filibuster better than anyone—and he’s uniquely suited to rally support among key Senators and pundits. (7/x)
Abolishing the filibuster is crucial, and it'll take all of us to make it happen. Make your voice heard this election cycle and help us ensure that @JoeBiden and Senate Democrats commit to eliminating the filibuster in 2021 ⬇️ 2020.indivisible.org (8/8)
