Hey #BTSARMY! @BTSx50States Had a few questions asking about spins and goals for radio when #BTS_Dynamite launches. Here’s a thread with some answers and tips. Think of radio as a marathon and not a sprint. 1st goal should be to encourage stations to add the song.
Radio doesn’t ever automatically start songs out in power rotation (their highest category). This is where the marathon comes in. Even songs from the most familiar artists with the core core radio audience (TS, Billie, Post, etc) take time to become familiar and popular.
If a station adds a song and plays it let’s say 3-6 times a day this is actually a GOOD thing. It’s likely in their new music category. It means they are trying to make it familiar with the core audience. Each station plays theirs a different amount. Some higher than others.
Once they’ve spun it for a while (if the station does research) they can test it with their audience. This is why the marathon is important. If they test it too soon it will come back super unfamiliar with low scores (even for US artists like I mentioned above).
Stations will use that data combined with data like streaming and sales both nationally and in the market the station is located in to determine what to do next. This ultimately determines for most stations if the song moves up to a higher rotation or down a lower one or off.
Oddly enough I can actually a song too much as soon as it comes out. I’ve had some(not BTS) that when I’ve tested them the first time the audience was already sick of them so we had to stop playing them. Radio has to “warm” the audience up to all new music.
The goal for any station is to make the music we’re adding go to power rotation and then stay in categories where we play older music after it peaks on the charts. This means it was a “hit” in our world. I can take 1-2 months of airplay or longer to get that answer.
So stay positive. Request “Dynamite” from your local stations and make sure the stations know you live in their city! That means you affect their ratings. Then be patient once they add it for it to increase in spins. Also, if a station doesn’t add first week don’t freak!
We only have so many slots on our playlists and if we don’t have anything coming out that week then we won’t have room to add anything new. This might mean stations who want to add it might not have room then 1st week. When Gaga/Ari came out I had to wait 3 wks to add it.
It’s actually a good thing to see stations add every week because that will help with chart momentum over time. Stay positive like the boys! Focus on the goals and continue to stream, buy, and Shazam at the same time. Radio looks at that data! Hope this helps. 💜📻
Thinkin about doing an Insta Live where we can chat more about this and other stuff next week maybe! It would be easier to take questions and answer them there because the notifications become hard to keep up with on here. If that’s something you’re interested in lemme know.
