The debate over so-called “#CancelCulture” has grown louder over the second half of the decade.

The rights and wrongs of "cancelling" have never been more prominent in the cultural conversation than they are now.

But how did we get here?

Check this *thread* to find out 👇
“The word 'cancel' as we know it is likely to come from the 1991 crime thriller New Jack City”

🎥 Is this claim true or false?
True.

In one scene, drug boss Nino, played by Wesley Snipes, is railed at by his girlfriend for the violence he oversees.

His response? To cancel her, obviously
“Call-out culture and cancel culture are the same”

🗣️ Is this claim true or false?
False.

A call-out often precedes a cancellation: if someone says something online that I find offensive, I can tell them and they avoid doing it again.

Since the idea of a call-out is remedial rather than punitive, some activists have publicly advocated it over #CancelCulture
“Some 150 authors and activists have signed an open letter denouncing cancel culture”

✍️ Is this claim true or false?
This is true.

The Harper's letter was signed by many public figures, including JK Rowling, Margaret Atwood and Salman Rushdie.

It condemns what they see as a loss of open debate and tolerance
How many did you get right?
