All y'all psychologists who stand on your PhD hierarchy should be ashamed of yourselves. This insistence that only people with PhDs are important to @APA will have me leaving this organization.
What a stance for exclusivity and disenfranchisement of voices. If this is truly the value, mission, and goal of this organization, it is not my organization.
The insistence that this is a "doctoral standard" - this may as well be a statement that research psychologists are not important to the organization. It is no wonder scientists left APA in droves and found other homes. This APA doesn't feel like a home to me.
Thank you to the folks speaking up against this stance. Why would we want to exclude young psychologists' voices from APA? These perspectives are the ones that need support in this org.

Someone else on council mentioned that allowing master's students to vote is insulting to doctoral level students. If you are a PhD student offended by your Master's level colleagues, get out. We don't want you.
This power structure is exactly how academia got itself to where it is today.
Apparently, the implication of allowing graduate students to vote is that we are telling them they are functionally psychologists. And so we shouldn't allow them to vote.
Thank you to the voices of reason who are recognizing the role of diversity in this issue. We need to be making space at the table for these voices. For all voices.
Not going to lie: saying disenfranchisement of master's level students and DEI issues are confounded & insisting we separate them is a racist thing to say. I can't be silent about this.
When your colleagues point out that most of our diversity lay in Master's level education or that upholding a PhD-level "standard" excludes BIPOC and/or low SES and/or people with disabilities and you continue to argue against people w/Master's degrees, you're being racist.
I don't know why I think the people that need to hear this are on Twitter, but I hope someone has the bravery to call them out. This is not acceptable.
