Here is an excellent table from Gia Horary listing the accidental dignities and debilities, as well as their weighting system (her site will be linked at the bottom of the thread with sources) 
The weighting system is a newer concept, as the ancient astrologers treated all essential dignities as equally important. William Lilly, however, claimed they descended in importance from domicile to decan, and this is the system most commonly used and my personal preference.
With the weighting system, you can see which planets are most and least dignified, with the higher numbers being obviously better placed!
Now, why is this important? Does the strength of a planet matter? The answer is, quite obviously, of course it is! The better conditioned a planet, the more easily it can express itself and its positive attributes.
All planets carry both good and bad qualities, and when a Malefic, Saturn for example, is well-conditioned, its lessons can feel productive and constructive. A poorly conditioned Benefic like Jupiter could just as easily lead to egoism, overconsumption and laziness.
For example, I have Mars in Libra in the first house with a close conjunction to my Ascendant. Mars is a Nocturnal planet, and I have a Diurnal chart, meaning it is my Malefic out of Sect (MOOS), and it is in detriment (opposite domicile) and peregrine (not dignified)
Because of its poor condition, Mars expresses itself extremely negatively in my chart. When Mars was activated in my chart, Mars (injurious, violent) in my 1st house (the head, health) could be correlated with the multiple TBIs I received during that year.
These also show up natally! To continue with my example of Mars, it's position in Libra (balance) in the 1st house (body) has negatively affected my literal balance. I'm quite honestly the clumsiest person ever and have the deep scars on my face to prove it.
