1/9 I echo the @vsiv comment - may all public reps be as clear & thoughtful as @SeanCasten and as good at their jobs.

Of course, as someone cited in this article, I respectfully disagree on many points of his thoughtful thread 👇 Here's a few of my thoughts:
2a/9 Rep. Casten is incorrect about H2 storage. My former mates from @Livermore_Lab built a cryo-compressed tank in 2006. Gen 2 got 1000 km on a single fill in a Prius. Works great. Already used in many H2 vehicles on the road. llnl.gov/news/llnl's-pr…
2b/9 Full review of cryocompressed tanks like those commercialized today was done at @argonne & can be found here:
energy.gov/sites/prod/fil…
3/9 As many have commented, H2 is essential to decarbonizing industrial beat and feedstocks. Here, the value is we can’t electrify big parts of industry (22% of US GHGs). H2 today is most versatile, economic & available in bulk. For more, check out energypolicy.columbia.edu/research/repor…
4/9 Hydrogen can make fuels for shipping (like ammonia) which can’t be decarbonized with electricity. Already, the @IMOHQ is looking at this. One place to learn more is this new @cleanaircatf report: catf.us/2020/07/buildi…
5/9 For heavy-duty & long-haul vehicles, H2 is a strong contender for zero-C fuel. Part of the reason why: batteries take up 40% of the cargo space in electric long-haul trucks (like this one) nextbigfuture.com/2017/11/tesla-…
6/9 There are certainly challenges to production of H2 from green power, including cost and infrastructure. These should not be ignored. They call instead for both innovation & infrastructure investments. The @ClimateCrisis report agrees: climatecrisis.house.gov/report
7/9 Today, the best answer in most markets is zero-C “blue” H2 from gas (#CCS). @SeanCasten is correct that you lose some efficiency in conversion. You also lose the carbon (!) that's the job.

We could reduce today’s H2 emissions about 400Mt/y this way, scaling fast & cheap
8/9 Punchline; @SeanCasten is right to be challengethe #HydrogenHypeCycle. Deployment has issues: cost, infrastructure, policy, value, utility & speed. His points have merit.

They’re also all addressable. #WeGotThis with focus & investment
9/9 Hydrogen is the Swiss Army Knife of deep decarbonization. We need to advance zero-C hydrogen deployment with speed, determination, care and humility. This is a chance for America to lead.
