THREAD: Two years ago my life took a 180 degree turn. My hero was diagnosed with gastric cancer in the US.
I was with her and dad in the states and I took the extremely difficult decision of moving back to Mumbai, to live alone.

Imagine this: A disabled woman, living alone in Mumbai for the first time, with no help. It was psychotic and I don’t know where I got the strength.
The uncertainty of her survival was devastating. After coming back, I was left with so many responsibilities, of which I had no clue. I spent hours at the bank learning about EMIs, interest rates, and loans.
My parents were worried, they didn’t know if I’d be able to manage things. I took on the responsibilities because I didn’t want my parents to worry. I wanted them to know that I’m capable.
Depression and anxiety took over. They were my friends. I didn’t know how to deal, and I kept quiet. I didn’t tell my parents. I didn’t want my mom to stress out. I fought through it though. I kept a happy face, while I battled with grief over her diagnosis.
After a couple of months, I proved it to my parents that I’m capable of juggling multiple things. Do you know why I’m telling you this now, after two years? Because the lockdown has brought uncertainty, fear, and vulnerability into our lives.
If I’m able to overcome my fears, learn new things, and take responsibility, then you can too. You can overcome your fears, learn new and important things no matter your age, and take responsibility because you are capable. All you have to do is make adjustments in your life.
My mom passed away last year, but I know she’s proud of the woman I became. I’m a replica of her, and it makes me feel powerful. My hero would be proud of me. I love you, mommy. I miss you.
