Princeton chose not to include my responses to their Qs about the #MacFellow award in this announcement—What it was like when I got the call? What the award means to me? What I’m working on now?—bc I asked them to accurately recount my response to Q1 or to not quote me at all. 1/
So here are my responses in full:

1. We look to convey the surprise and excitement of receiving word out of the blue for this award, so if you’d think back to the moment you got the call and recreate that moment, that would be my first request. It was an eventful week! I received the call from the MacArthur Foundation the morning after a tense call with Princeton university officials investigating my support of students protesting the genocide in Gaza. I was scrolling through my inbox while coffee brewed, and I saw the subject line, “Time Sensitive & Confidential Conversation – URGENT” and about an hour later I was on the call receiving the amazing news. What would have been a moment of pure joy and excitement was tempered by the sense that the same institutions that are quick to celebrate our accomplishments have been slow to res...
2. We also ask recipients to speak to what being selected for this honor means to them and their scholarship. As I understand it, this award is intended not only to highlight the work of individuals, but to incite the brilliance that we all possess by showing us the many forms that “genius” can take. This overlaps with themes in my most recent work on imagination as a collective resource. So receiving this honor encourages me to continue beating that drum in my teaching, writing, and advocacy – that the many crises we face as people and planet is in part due to the fact that we are living inside the imagination of those who monopolize power and resources to benefit the few at the expense of the man...

On this 2-year anniversary of the Ida B. Wells Just Data Lab, I’m happy to share some of the work coming out of the #IdaLab. Before I do, lemme say: NONE of this would be possible w/o the digital stewardship of @CierraRobson, associate director extraordinaire!
This semester one of the #IdaLab teams led by @PrincetonCITP emerging scholar, Kenia Hale, and rising @PrincetonAAS senior, Payton Croskey, focused on liberatory technologies.
The Liberatory Technology team created a GitHub repository (which they hope you will use!) that grew out of the research question: “how do people protect themselves from the state while also dancing in the sun?”

In the year of our Lorde 2020, folks still fix their fingers to type msgs like this: Image
But for every Reggie, there are 100 notes of encouragement & solidarity that I NEVER take for granted: Image
The fact that ppl take time out of their day to share encouraging msgs like these, mean so much! I call them micro-affections😊 Image

I am inspired in this work by DuBois—“do not think of the purpose of the University as simply a cloistered center of authoritative scientific information, nor do we regard it simply as a center of effective training for students...” /3 Image
