It would remove the single most potent weapon in the GOP arsenal—i.e. the illusion that the *financial ability* to pay out benefits is dependent on payroll tax receipts + trust fund balance(s). 3/4
It’s what you’d do if you were *really* serious about protecting these programs against future cuts. The Trustees would declare Social Security and Medicare solvent over an infinite time horizon, and GOP would have to find a new excuse to attack these wildly popular programs. 4/4
