Hi Folks! I'm still on break. However, I have received lots of messages & emails over the past few days requesting scholarly book & article recommendations to help contextualize the contemporary moment re: the #CatholicChurch & #BLM. So, here you go:
The story of the rise & fall of the #FederatedColoredCatholics of the US-esp. the clerical supplanting of Black lay leader Dr. Thomas W. Turner-is ESSENTIAL reading for these times. Start w/ Marilyn Nickels & David Southern. Links are provided below. #BlackCatholicHistoryMatters
1. David Southern, *John LaFarge and the Limits of Catholic Interracialism,* 1996. (esp. chapters 5 & 6)
This fall, my students will read the corresp. of the priests who orchestrated Dr. Turner's ouster, de-radicalized the FCC, & attempted to suppress #BlackCatholic protest in the church. Note: Dr. Turner's and the FCC's strongest supporters were #BlackCatholicwomen. #NoBigSurprise
3. Scholarship on the #CatholicChurch & the Black freedom movement remains minimal. This is esp. true of work that takes the longstanding activism & leadership of #BlackCatholics seriously. One notable exception is Karen Johnson's excellent, #OneinChrist
Much of Johnson's scholarship has been cited in various venues in recent days and weeks, but not properly attributed to her. So, remember that @womnknowhistory! #AlwaysCiteWomen
4. Looking for an article that examines the leading roles that #WhiteCatholics played in massive resistance to desegregation, read & assign Justin Poche's “The Catholic Citizens’ Council: Religion & White Resistance in Post-
War Louisiana.” US Catholic Historian 24 (2006): 47-68.
5. See also my article: “‘You Could Do the Irish Jig, But Anything African Was Taboo’: #BlackNuns, Contested Memories, and the 20th Century Struggle to Desegregate U.S. Catholic Religious Life." Journal of African American History 102, no.2 (Spring 2017): 125-56. #CiteBlackWomen
6. Finally, make sure you have a copy of Bryan Massingale's #RacialJustice and the #CatholicChurch published w/ @OrbisBooks. It is another essential reading for these times.
Wishing you the best w/ the start of the semester! Please remember that #BlackCatholics have NEVER been silent in the fight against racial injustice. They have simply been unheard. Note too: #BlackCatholics speak for themselves, always have & will. #BlackHistoryIsCatholicHistory
