1/ Notes from @ballmatthew episode at @InvestLikeBest

It's a monster episode (duration: 106 minutes).

Matthew Ball is, of course, an intellectual giant in the media space, and his depth of understanding is on full display here.

I cannot say I understood all of it though.
2/ The pinnacle of IP is "massive immersive fantasy worlds"
3/ "Reed Hastings has been clear that he considers the greatest competition to be Fortnite as opposed to Disney, and even still, he sees YouTube as more competitive than HBO."

4/ $NFLX is too far ahead of the curve.

"If Netflix can launch worse content to greater success than you can, and because of its greater scale it can economically do that, that's a huge advantage."
5/ TV is not going away. Americans currently watch 5.5 hrs of TV per day. In 10-15 years, it's likely to come down to 3.5-4 hrs. Interactive gaming/social is going to be the substitution.
6/ People spend 130 mins/day on $SPOT. Given this investment by users on the platform may lead to outsized opportunities for SPOT.
7/ The demographic shift clearly implies big secular tailwinds for gaming.

"The cost of being a little behind in gaming when you're an investor, when you're in media, is huge"

As a non-gamer investor, that certainly rings true.
8/ Why it's almost impossible to compete against Marvel at its own game. Play a different game, and you might have a chance.
9/ The elements of metaverse.

One of those ideas I think I get it when I listen to it, but I probably don't since I cannot imagine myself explaining what a metaverse is to someone who doesn't get it.
10/ "Is Fortnite a game or a platform?"

"It's a game, but come back in a year and ask me the same question again"

I haven't done much reading on Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic.
11/ "...the premise of making games for Epic was for R&D. It was built to be extensible, to be nimble, to be flexible."
12/ "Who is closest to the metaverse today?"

"It's actually $TCHEHY. They probably don't have all the tethers in place today, but while not discounting this to the level of a flip of a switch, they actually can do it in a way that is never before possible."
13/ Interactivity while maintaining the communal sense for certain categories of media content is yet to be figured out.
14/ "Disney's not just best at telling stories, they are best at extracting value from those stories.

...not only is Disney more effective at building hit content, but they are more effective at monetizing that, more so than any other player."

15/ "two things that I really need to get smarter on, and
those are, payment platforms and blockchain."
