I backed Warren in the primary. Klobuchar did a classic "kneecapping" of her—to oppose Warren's progressivism but also soften the blow of a white woman (to wit, Klobuchar) not being selected—and I chose the most famous "kneecapping" analogy of my lifetime. cosmopolitan.com/politics/a3354…
PS/ I don't indulge sexist tropes, and I prefer Elizabeth Warren to be president over any man (or woman) in America. Also worth noting is that—as I knew from growing up near Kerrigan's hometown, and it being a very big deal in my area—the Kerrigan attacker was a man, Shane Stant.
PS2/ That said, I *agree* that many in media have turned the VP debate into a clearly gendered narrative, and *agree* that Kamala Harris would be an excellent pick and that there are many reasons Biden might go with her over Warren. My feelings on Klobuchar are a separate matter.
PS3/ I think it was clear that Amy Klobuchar was looking to play a PR game both as she exited the presidential race and as she exited the VP debate. I think her clear and transparent plan was to say she didn't "lose" in the VP race because Biden needed to pick a woman or color.
PS4/ The cost of Klobuchar's PR campaign—I never was really *in* the VP race, she implied, therefore couldn't have *lost* it (hurting my future prospects), as Biden was always looking for a woman of color—was aiming a low blow at a Senate colleague: Warren. A classic kneecapping.
PS5/ The Kerrigan attack is *the most famous kneecapping of my lifetime*. It's inarguable. For me to use that analogy is *not* an attempt to say that two U.S. senators are in a catfight, and honestly that image or notion or trope would not have occurred to me. These are senators.
PS6/ That said, given how COSMOPOLITAN and other outlets received my comment—understandable, given what other commentators were saying regarding the VP debate then—if I could go back and find a different trope than "kneecapping," I certainly would do so. But I can't reverse time.
PS7/ As everyone who reads this feed knows, a) I'm voting for Biden, b) I've enormous respect for Kamala Harris, think Biden will pick her or Susan Rice, and am/will be a big admirer of either VP candidate—so don't take my praise of Warren as a knock on Biden or any VP candidate.
PS8/ I wish that—instead of calling me a pundit—COSMOPOLITAN had noted I endorsed Elizabeth Warren for POTUS *and* explained on the same feed COSMOPOLITAN was quoting *why* I thought Klobuchar did as she did. I positioned Klobuchar as a typically cynical pol, not in a "catfight."
PS9/ The quote below in no way reflects anything I've ever said about Warren or Klobuchar, the former of whom I'd already publicly endorsed to become America's commander-in-chief—a point COSMOPOLITAN elided for (I think) the transparent reason: it didn't fit their narrative. /end
