Welcome to my third of 10 threads released on 10 consecutive days about starting an Instagram business!
Today’s topics:
👉Types of Instagram content
👉An in-depth look at the content uses
Let’s go! ⬇️
👉Single image post
A post containing a single image that appears on your feed
👉Multiple image feed post
A post with multiple images in a slideshow format that appears on your feed (also known as a carousel)
A post containing an extended video (1min+) that appears on your feed and under the IGTV tab on your account page
👉Story
Time sensitive post (max 24 hrs). Stories do not appear on the feed - they appear by clicking the profile pic or accessing stories from Home
Collections of relate stories that can be gathered into a slideshow. Highlights preserve stories forever and can only be accessed by clicking an account page and looking under their bio
👉Reels
Instagrams newest feature, which is basically IGs take on TikTok
📍The 2nd most common type of post on Instagram
Uses:
👉Deliver longer bits of information
👉Mini tutorials
👉Infographics in presentation form
Post these when you want to explain a longer concept to your followers
We’ll talk about this more when we discuss monetization on Day 9
📍IGTV is instagrams attempt to draw long form video creators
The IGTV length limit is currently 10 minutes, and 1 hour for large accounts
📍Instagram says they plan to lift all limits eventually
👉Video tutorials
👉Behind the scenes content
👉YouTube alternative
Now, to be honest, I’m NOT a big fan of IGTV, and don’t pay too much attention to it.
Here’s why:
👉IGTV has no search feature, so videos don’t have much long term potential and arent worth the effort
👉IGTV is directly competing with a giant in YouTube. Competing with YouTube is hard enough, but IGTV also has no ads, and doesn’t pay its creators
IGTV seems to be something that the audience and creators are less excited about, and unless Instagram figures something out soon, they will not overtake YouTube
👉At the 15 second mark, IGTV will stop and prompt the viewer to press a button to continue watching. This means the 13-15 second point of your video need to be compelling and specifically geared to keep viewers wanting more
Have a video that serves its purpose without sound
OR
Have a video that compels the viewer to turn the sound on
📍Stories are the most important way to connect with your audience in real time and show off some personality.
Uses:
👉Paid promos
👉Promote links
👉Promote posts (yours and others)
👉Behind the scenes content
👉Interact w/ fans through polls, questions, and more
📍If your audience sees that you don’t spend any time being active with them through stories, they won’t appreciate the person behind the account.
Ignoring stories is one of the most common Instagram mistakes.
📍Highlights are one of the best ways to provide massive value to your fans and share your story.
Highlights allow you to add ongoing stories into a collective stream, which you can place on your account page. It can tell stories over months at a time!
Uses:
👉Show account growth
👉Create FAQ
👉Document your journey
Highlights have limitless potential.
I ❤️ highlights
This is Instagram newest feature and is almost a copycat of TikTok.
Reels allow you to post 15 second long looped content, which has tremendous viral potential
Uses:
👉Viral loops
👉Behind the scenes
👉Short tutorials
However, not much is known about reels yet.
📍However, given TikToks meteoric rise and how heavily Instagram is already promoting reels, they will be an integral part of Instagram moving forward.
Now that we’ve covered content types, you might have a lot of questions like:
👉is reposting ethical?
👉What if I sucked at TikTok?
👉Which content types are the most important?
👉How do I know which type of content to focus on?
👉Do I need to use all the content types?
👉What is the best post strategy?
I’ll also share my personal sneaky but 100% ethical strategy for using reels, even with no production skills.
