.@Wilkinson4BC quizzing @jjhorgan now on the “false choice” from gov that students either attend physically in Sept or withdraw to home schooling and distance education. Asks why schools can’t accommodate remote virtual learning as well. A common Q from parents.
@Wilkinson4BC @jjhorgan “We are going to try and make this work for everybody. Whatever they need. If its in class or hybrid we will work it out,” says @jjhorgan
Then calls Wilkinson disrespectful and his suggestion incomprehensible. And then both sides start yelling at each other.
@Wilkinson4BC @jjhorgan Wilkinson asks: "Parents want choice. They want to have distance learning provided from their bricks and mortar school. They don’t want to be forced to withdraw from their school.”
“All they are asking for is an element of parental choice."
@Wilkinson4BC @jjhorgan .@jjhorgan says “asked and answered.” Then says parents should ask local school districts and should not be listening to leader of opposition like @Wilkinson4BC
Horgan is duffing these particular questions….
@jjhorgan responds to 4th Q with: "To parents that are concerned, and I appreciate this anxiety, they should immediately if they have not already contact their school and contact their trustees and work through the system.”
“If that in adequate for the leader of the opposition I regret that,” @jjhorgan says on @Wilkinson4BC Q on why parents can’t have choice for remote learning at school without having to drop out and enrol in distance learning.
“I’m surprised though that the leader of the opposition believes somehow from my perch in the legislature I can determine what’s in the best interest of families in fort st. john, families in kamloops, families in surrey, when you have duly elected trustees…” says @jjhorgan
@jjhorgan says BC puts in the “framework” on back to school but if parents want remote learning they should engage with local districts, schools and principals and tell them they want that.
"What I’m saying to families across British Columbia, this is a time of high anxiety, I absolutely understand that, we are taking every step we can to make sure you have local options in your community, wherever that might be to meet the needs of your children and family."
@Wilkinson4BC repeats: Do parents have any other options than distance learning or home schooling? @jjhorgan says “I don’t think you want to hear what I’m saying. I’m saying everyone is different.” Then criticizes Wilkinson for asking so many education Qs.
.@jjhorgan now citing media reports that quote families supportive of physically returning kids to school. Horgan is getting upset.
@jjhorgan calls @toddstonebc “obtuse” during back and forth heckling.
Wilkinson summarizes: Parents either send kids physically to school, or take them out for home schooling or distance learning.
@jjhorgan says “that’s not correct.”
@Wilkinson4BC has now moved on to homelessness.
That was quite an exchange on back to school.
In summary: @jjhorgan suggests parents go to local principal and school districts and demand remote learning options if they want them, but BC gov not going to institue it.
@Wilkinson4BC @jjhorgan .@jjhorgan makes a reference to Vancouver School Board introducing a plan next week that might have hybrid options. Which is true, many of the 16 largest secondary schools in BC will be allowed to do hybrid models with some kids, and many of those schools are in VSB.
