Just as we cant discuss Nigeria's parlous state sufficiently without mentioning that Nigeria has spent more of its years under plundering military rulers, its also crucial to review the under-contribution of Nigeria's religious systems and its attitude towards the social system.
I have an elder brother, who is a pastor today that finished from Ansar-ud-deen College, Isolo. The second one was also Gani Adam's mate at Ansar-ud-deen High School, Falolu, Surulere. Bola Ajibola and MKO Abiola are amongst prominent Muslims that attended Baptist Boys, Abeokuta.
The question here isn't about whether churches or Islamic organizations should have schools and businesses that are subjected to taxes. The crux here questions the spiritual-moral objectives of religious bodies, both Islam and Christianity owning 'for profit' schools.
My theory is: CoE help address social misery from bottom of Maslow's hierarchy of needs, but our religious systems have sustained its hegemony by sitting atop of the pyramid, at the 'self actualization' apex, always waiting for d bottom to produce its clientele of deluded people.
A feasibilities report done in 2013 by a Nigerian bank renowned for targeting churches for loans, says our religious bodies have a combined cash liquidity of $129Million! A sum that didnt come from any investment, apart from what flows through indirect channels from public funds.
I have never seen any Nigerian indicted for looting, who professed serving Ogun, or Amadioha, or is an atheist. Corrupt politicians belong to a church, or a mosque, and are being prayed for.
