1. Good article of special interest to independent scholars @RoninInstitute @IGDOREinstitute but applicable to all of us. The non-academic reader might be frustrated, though. "Why do they do that?" The answer is "it's what we do". @AcademicChatter

2. It does beg an answer and as is the case with over 90% of published research, we have no causal relation, just associations. It seems the variables most strongly associated with this "impulse" are, first, the urgency (personal, institutional, political) to produce the desired
3. result and, second, the relationship or sensibility of the researcher to local and grassroots movements needs. Many researchers simply respond to these demands without questioning why. "It's what we do".
4. After browsing the literature about co-production of knowledge and knowledge brokering, several publications revealed that one or more researcher, with no training for that role, became the knowledge broker.
5. Where do you apply to get a broker for your research? Is there funding for that? No? Then let's do it because "it's what we do".
6. My work as an independent scholar has been mostly producing science education pieces about something of interest for some community. I lost count of the number of surveys and qualitative data analysis that I performed because the data didn't exist.
7. Why? And why go beyond the assignment's format? Because "it's what we do".
8. There are accumulated discrepancies in academia and non-academic research that we expect to grow:
- a superavit of overqualified academic personnel outside formal academia
- research demand X availability of funds
- research urgency X application processing time
9. I have conduced several well funded institutional projects as principal investigator while in traditional academic settings. The impact of my non-funded and non-institutional research was greater, though.
10. Food for thought.
