1. My journey in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka began in 2006. I arrived school with my stove, Ghana-must-go bag filled with foodstuff, my Echolac box and what have you. As I left home all the neighbours cheered me on!

"Chibuuuu go well o" some said.

2. I started attending lectures, running from NSLT to Jimbaz to Carver building and then to GS Building. It was fun. I was beginning to make new friends, by this time Akintola/Akpabio hall was still male hostel so I often passed the night there, or sometimes at Mbanefo hall.
3. It was a whole new world.

Then, one thing led to another and I lost that admission. I tried everything but to no avail. It finally dawned on me I was going to write jamb again when I saw my friends writing the first semester exams and I couldn't. I cried!

I’m not a fan of risk assessments.

But I am a fan of being able to talk frankly about #suicide followed by empathetic, rights-based support.

This thread does some good myth busting on that. And yes self-injury is different.

Here’s a few bits I’d add from lived experience...
2/ If we say we’re thinking about suicide, don’t panic.

It may or may not be a crisis. It may feel odd to you—but some of us have thought about suicide for decades, regularly.

I consider myself largely healed but I still have regular suicide thoughts.

(Don’t panic, I’m OK)
3/ It’s helpful to understand the different nuances of how we are thinking about suicide...

Are thoughts abstract or occasional... or a lot, or increasing? For how long?
&
Is it a thought (‘I could’) or a desire (‘I want’) or an urge (‘I need to’) or a plan (‘I’m ready’).

Many therapists don’t know what they don’t know about #suicide risk assessment.

A thread.

1/20
Some MH prof’ls got upset w/me this week for saying in the NYT that some therapists don’t ask about suicidal ideation, even w/depressed clients.

The psychologist who started the pile-on said he asks abt thoughts of “harming yourself.”

That’s NOT asking suicidal thoughts.

2/20
Sure, you might consider harming oneself to be suicide, & suicide to be harming oneself. That’s bc suicide is so taboo that we’ve created euphemisms for it.

But not all self-harm is suicide, & not all suicidal people see suicide as self-harm.

cw: suicide, reactionary bs
[Thread]

One thing that really pissies me off are those facist reactionary "#ProLife" bigots.

And I'll explain in detail, WHY they are bigoted.

So strap in and hold tight...
Regardless if those advocate for the [very facist] idea of de-facto criminalizing #suicide or #abortions, "#ProLife" advocates aka. bigots are not willing to provide even a halfass alternative substitute as a figleaf to pseudo-legitimize their ideas.
I mean, regardless whether or not one person should be allowed to have a say into the health, life and well-beijng of another person is something agrees with [I think #ProChoice is the only non - reactionary-facist answer!]...

🚨 Today, while our country is in the midst of turmoil, I received notice that the White House is proposing to cut firearm injury prevention research funding.

This is RIDICULOUS (but, predictable)

rollcall.com/2021/01/12/whi…
It reflects the continued, tired trope that a #publichealth approach to firearm injury is inherently opposed to gun ownership.

It ignores the fact that firearm injury IS a health problem.

nejm.org/doi/full/10.10…
It ignores that the only way forward, is by coming together and creating real data - real evidence - that can motivate real, sustained change.

(This is how we've decreased car crash & HIV deaths, & the basis of much #COVID19 work.)

There is SO MUCH new science & high-quality journalism getting published about #COVID19 right now.

Here's a thread on some of the pieces that caught my eye this week, and why they matter:
1) How to get people vaccinated: A thoughtful viewpoint from @abuttenheim @kevin_volpp & Loewenstein: "the potential for these vaccines to help halt the pandemic will be limited without comparable attention paid to traversing the behavioral “last mile”" jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/…
2) #COVID19 is top 3 causes of death for all Americans.

(For those younger than 45, injuries - like #gunviolence, #suicide, & #opioid overdose - remain more common. More to come later in this thread.)

#ANTCHRIST AGENDA:

Considering what's happening in the world today, it causes me to look back on moments in history when the antichrist was publicly, visibly & obviously flaunting his demonic end time agenda as is happening now.

Think of when Yeshua headed toward Yerusalayim.
The demonic's attempt to bring about the destruction of salvation & hope for mankind was on full display. satan thought he had bested Yahweh (again ... silly fool) and that men could no longer be redeemed. But as an ex-employee who's no longer privy to the workings of El-ohim, he
he ended up looking as dumb as these lying, cheating demonrat children of his are about to look come January.

Look at what ushered in The Dark Ages. Again the antichrist spirit attempted to take everything foundational out of the way #Christians worship and relate to The Three.

Risk of OD to prescribed #opioids is 0.13% (Kaiser, Jnl of Pain 2019), while risk of death by OD increases more than 300% with dose variability of ≥30% (JAMA 2019).

0.13% = risk of OD to prescribed #opioids (Kaiser 2019). Dose reduction is "inconsistent" in lowering OD risk. Research found "no support for RSM [risk stratification & monitoring] as a means of decreasing overdose.”

Jnl of Pain 2019;20(1) jpain.org/article/S1526-…
0.1% to 0.23% = risk of OD to prescribed #opioids, per Canada's 2017 Guideline.

0.1% for <20 MED, 0.14% for 20–49, 0.18% for 50–99 MED, 0.23% for ≥100 MED.

Discontinuation carries a significantly higher risk of death.

Woah..that was freaky but familiar. Was lying down & decided to get up to take pain meds for #endometriosis and #fibroids and it felt as painful to get up as the day after surgery. In kitchen, sweating, lightheaded. Quickly squatted to avoid passing out holding onto fridge door
..which swung open..but I did not fall. Then once head feeling better, stood up long enough to take meds...then walked, wobbly and lightheaded to chair. I can't quite feel my palms but that will come back. This probably gets to be called 10/10 pain..but maybe really an 8/10
Great..and a migraine too..scotoma.. taking a migraine med and lying down. Man, when it rains it pours.

Mother Nature is such a misogynist.

SO glad I did not decide to rent a car and try to go Finger Lakes this weekend to see peak foliage.

Does infectious vs non-infectious make a difference when the outcome is the same? Deaths from #C19, #cancer, #CHD, #suicide, #Diabetes, #Alzheimers ... are all deaths.
1/n
Do we care more about one rather than the other because we believe we have control over the infectious but not over the chronic disease?
2/n
I’m happy to tell you that this assumption is completely false.
In reality, we might have a bit of influence over the infectious ones... we can have proper hygiene but we have so much more influence over the chronic ones. Our fate is not written in our genes. 3/n
