Poor old Bill Morneau.
Here’s my take:
He gets into politics for altruistic reasons. He’s actually a human (not a lizard alien) and he decides he should bring his significant skills to the table in the service of the public. Very honourable.
And he joins a party with real vision, a smart balanced leader and a solid team with a plan. And they do it. They win an election, they cut child poverty, they make taxation much more fair and they advance a progressive agenda. Can’t please everyone but they do a very good job.
Then, pandemic and money needs to go out fast. Craig Kielburger, many forget, has serious cred. All parties want to be involved with his non-partisan activism. I suspect he and We are getting an unfair, undeserved rough ride. But that’s an aside. Good old Bill follows the rules.
They do quick due diligence. It’s presented to him and he signs off on it. Then scrutiny and this damned trip.
Now, $41,000 is chump change for Bill. Don’t hate him because he’s successful. But he would not know if it was on his Amex or someone else’s. His business manager?
They don’t run around looking for the bill that never came.
Craig Kielburger’s We comped his trip.
I very much doubt Bill knew. Until the scrutiny came.
This isn’t culpable anything. Except to the cons and a few biased or opportunist media folks.
So now Bill is looking at this. He’s about to be raked over the coals. He did nothing wrong. Despite that he can’t come out of this without being brutalized. He’s innocent. But it doesn’t matter. There is no justice here (common problem).
So what are his options?
Flock em. He’s done his part.
He owes nobody nothing. If the Canadian political scheme is such bullsh!t that he’s going to get pilloried for this, it’s beneath him. He doesn’t deserve it. And, frankly, we don’t deserve him if we let a good person be so brutalized in such case.
Smartest thing he could do is hit the road.
Poor fellow. He did everything right. He did it for the right reasons. He did it selflessly. He was good.
I wish him well.
Good luck @Bill_Morneau and thanks for your public service. 👍
