I was recently asked about my background in relationship to cryptocurrency and cryptoart. I didn't go into the details at that time but here's some of that for those who are curious.
In terms of my understanding of cryptocurrency I think it began with virtual currency and Edward Castronova's research on Second Life in the early aughts.
So DeFi farming hit a rough spot. People started talking about NFTs cause you can flip them. @APompliano pointed out that "digital art" is the "next big bet" and the NFT/cryptoart pundits established their positions.
Now what are you going to do, cryptoartist?
This is going to be a bubble in which fast moving artists can benefit before the collapse. Cause every bubble pops, right? Which means a downtime will follow. Take advantage now.
I hate to say this, because I've tried to promote various platforms on other chains, but this is all about platforms on the Ethereum blockchain. So start tracking gas prices and focusing your efforts there.
I briefly brushed up against the joke meme but it was over before I heard much about it. People are taking this very seriously and it will be interesting to see if it impacts the individual instigators brands.
Building @cryptoartnet part-time is so frustrating. I feel like everyone's passing me in the fast lane.
It didn't help to have a big crypto company string me along for literally months and kill my first project launch. Still moving forward but lost a lot of momentum.
Nevertheless, staying in my lane and building as I can has already been hugely rewarding.
I'm glad to be part of the cryptoart/NFT scene and look forward to much more to come.
I want to deeply thank everyone that's responded to this tweet and given me some encouragement.
I feel @cryptoartnet is a really strong project and a lot of artists have embraced it which is what made it possible in the first place.
CryptoArt is what it is because of the artists, the platforms and the collectors.
Having one individual throwing their money/weight around as @WhaleShark_Pro is doing & then dropping in on political discussions to say he's creating a Zen Garden w/ @whale_community is not right.
I really wanted to stay out of the @WhaleShark_Pro controversy. I feel everyone has their role to play in the CryptoArt community but there's a limit to any one person's power.
If you want to change things, launch your own platform.
But don't pillage & burn & then launch.
I'm starting to get some other takes via DM. Feel free to send me your opinion in confidence.
At this point transparency is what we need but there seem to be people in all camps getting fucked over by people with power on platforms and in the collectors ranks.
For example, there have been numerous attempts to start music royalty stock markets of various types.
I wrote about many of these for Hypebot.com in the early 2010s before the tech blogs figured out that music tech startups weren't just streaming music.
