My parents were told by professionals I would never be able to make friends, I would never hold down a job, I would never graduate or have kids

I think if they were honest they would say my life was not worth living by their standards, this is a common message to parents
The idea of filicide gets normalized in settings of professional psychiatry and support structure

Parents of disabled children are taught the feeling of wanting to kill your child is normal, that it’s ok to grieve the loss of an imaginary version of your child
These are pervasive ideas that have their root in the ideas of normativity and eugenics

Consistently when parents of disabled children are surveyed they are forthright about having thoughts of euthanasia and sterilization
When disabled people are consulted on their own issues it’s not a very common occurance to have the same open-mindedness towards ending their own life(what a shocker) or potential for reproduction

These are unique problems that center around parent-professional relations
All disability rights as we have them have come from human rights movements which work with non-profits and gov’t orgs

When parents and professionals are included as stakeholders in our supports the influence of these eugenic ideas runs rampant as a conflict of interest
All support that doesn’t account for this ideological influence is bound to resemble the eugenic operations of our institutional past

Vulnerable disabled people(especially mute children) need protections in law against these sentiments, to ignore them is murder
This is why I fight so hard against centering advocacy around parents and giving them a platform to take over us/without our input

Parent groups in Canada here originally helped govt setup sterilization, it was led by parents with these sentiments
Everywhere you go in eugenics history there is some group of wealthy white parents designing these programs and chumming with rich people at banquets, balls, and meetings with gov to raise funds
Some of these standards set for me I may never reach but that doesn’t mean my life isn’t worth living
