of Shri Ganesh. It is said that Shri Ganesh took these forms to slay various demons that represent various sins or weaknesses of humans. Weaknesses like jealousy, arrogance, ego, desire, anger, greed, delusion and inebriation were the cause for which Shri Ganesh took these
8 forms of manifestation and these manifestations are characterised by different vehicles and missions. His first manifestation is Vakratunda. – Riding lion to eradicate jealousy.
There was a demon called Matsarasur, he was born from the anger, rivalry and jealousy of Indra,
the King of the Gods Sage Shukracharya, the guru of demons, gave him knowledge of Panchakshari hymn in praise of Shiva, he became a devotee of Shiva and started rigorous meditation with complete devotion. Soon Bholenath appeared before him and promised him a boon.
Matsarasur asked for fearlessness and that no God, demon or human can kill him. Upon getting the desired boon, he went to his realm and was crowned as King of demons. Matsarasur started his reign of terror everywhere. Soon he conquered earth where many kings were killed,
some surrendered. Then he attacked Pataal Lok (the nether world), the result was the same as earth. Not only he conquered the nether world but Sheshnaag, the king of serpents, conceded defeat and became compliant to his wishes. Being born out of jealousy, anger and rivalry
Matsarasur was not content with these two worlds, soon he began to look for the throne of heaven and started to torture Gods. Soon he defeated all the Gods including Indra and became King of all three worlds.
All the Gods went to Kailash to plead to Shiva, but Shiva was
helpless as he was the one who gave boon. Matsararur went back to his realm leaving his sons to rule heaven. Demons being demons, soon there was chaos everywhere and there was no place for righteousness. Having being denied help from everywhere, the Gods met Duttatreya
who advised them to do penance and please Shri Ganesh by reciting Ekakshari Hymn. The Gods did as advised with devotion and soon Vakratund appeared before them riding a lion and assured them that he will destroy Matsarasur. Vakratund went to Matsarasur’s realm and defeated
him in the battle. Upon realising his imminent death, Matsarasur fell on the feet of Vakratund and begged for his life. Vakratund saw that Matsarasur has conceded and now can change his behaviour, he let him live and allowed him to become his devotee. Vakratund accomplished
what he came for – He killed jealousy, anger and rivalry.
