Terror House Press is pleased to announce a new book: THE LAST SENTRY by Mikhail Drozdovsky, translated by @Fatalist_Rus! If you enjoy @MysteryGrove books, you'll love this, a first-hand account of the White Army during the Russian Civil War, never before published in English.
The year is 1918. The Bolsheviks have seized power in Moscow and withdrawn Russia from World War I. Refusing to accept communist domination, many monarchists, republicans, liberals, and others formed the White movement, beginning the Russian Civil War.
One of those men was Colonel Mikhail Drozdovsky. A decorated veteran of World War I and the Russo-Japanese War, Drozdovsky was a monarchist who opposed the Bolsheviks. At the time of the Russian Revolutions, he was serving in Romania as part of the Southwestern Front of WWI.
Drozdovsky resigned his commission following the October Revolution and aligned himself with General Mikhail Alekseyev, who had launched an anti-Bolshevik uprising in the Don region of southwestern Russia. Drozdovsky pledged to organize a volunteer army to resist the Bolsheviks.
On February 26, 1918, despite the Romanian army attempting to disarm his men (Romania having capitulated to the Central Powers), Drozdovsky began his march from Iași, Romania to the Don. The Iassy-Don March was one of the most important events of the Russian Civil War.
On April 21, 1918, Drozdovsky's forces captured the city of Rostov-on-Don from the Red Army. Three days later, he won another victory at Novocherkassk and formally joined the Volunteer Army, one of the largest and most feared White Armies during the Civil War.
Drozdovsky would go on to win many great victories against the Red Army and was later promoted to major general. He died on January 1, 1919 from a wound sustained during a battle near Stavropol. The Volunteer Army was nicknamed the Drozdovsky Regiment in his honor.
THE LAST SENTRY is Drozdovsky's personal journal written during the Iassy-Don March. While pessimistic about the White Army's chances, Drozdovsky chose to fight out of principle, believing that the Bolsheviks would destroy Russia unless they were defeated.
Due to left-wing domination of Russian and Soviet scholarship, Drozdovsky's journal has never been translated into English, despite its importance as a primary source of the Russian Civil War. THE LAST SENTRY will include a foreword and appendix by Kirill.
THE LAST SENTRY will be released by Terror House Press later this year.
