Jess has a very good thread. And she is right.

I’m putting on my Army Strategist hat while I smoke from my game design pipe. Here is why she is right. A thread.

First off, real world military structures cannot be used as a comparison in fantasy world military structures. This is actually a HUGE flaw in game design.

Why?
Militaries since the beginning of time have been evolutionary. They exist to defeat and overcome obstacles and enemies. Every time an enemy blocks an army from achieving success, the army evolves. Military innovations arise, and new tactics implemented.
So in a fantasy world, the military doesn’t only serve as a tool to defeat conventional enemies and armies. It exists to defeat dragons, magic users, dungeons, and any other obstacle or threat that exists to the kingdom or political entity in which it serves.
In fantasy worlds armies would disarm traps, explore dungeons, etc if that was a purpose for which it existed, and guess what, THEY like exist for that exact reason.
Kingdoms wouldn’t rely on adventurers to slay a dragon...the army would be purpose built to that end.

Same with removing a Lich from its lair.
Anyway, all this to say I agree with Jess. Fantasy militaries would hardly resemble medieval militaries, the same threats don’t exist. They’d be vastly different.
If a fantasy military resembled our real historical militaries, the generals and strategist in charge should be hung for incompetence.
