Good Morning Whittlesea
Railway to Whittlesea opened 1889.
Commenced from Spencer Street and ran via Royal Park, the Inner Circle through North Carlton and North Fitzroy before joining the present line crossing the Merri Creek bridge.

Electrification commenced in the early 1920s reaching as Reservoir. Rail motors began running between Reservoir and Whittlesea. Then electrics extended to Thomastown 1929.
When the line was opened from Collingwood to Princes Bridge passenger services were routed via the more direct path whilst freight services continued along the Inner Circle.

The railway beyond Lalor closed 29 Nov 1959. electrification had been extended to Lalor, and suburban electric trains began running to Lalor on 30 Nov 1959.
In 1964 the section from Lalor to Epping was electrified and reopened.

Suburban services have now been extended to Mernda on the former ROW.

There were tramways for transporting timber from the Kinglake area to the Whittlesea railway station (1911-26).

Mernda station first opened in Dec 1889 as South Yan Yean, renamed Mernda in Dec 1913.

Mernda re-opened 26 August 2018. It is hoped that the line will be extended back to Whittlesea in time.
