Whitfield was the terminus of the VR 2' 6" line from Wangaratta. First VR narrow gauge line to open 1899 closed in 1953. The Whitfield line goes through flat country but there were plans to extend into the mountain regions.

13/12/1949 the two locomotive roads were abolished.
The loco shed was not demolished but used locally.
