Thread
Today we are gonna talk about the much debated issue of fasting on Saturday
I would like us to know one thing that debated issues are always on things that aren't primary commandments (usul) found in Qur'an and hadith. They mainly occur in issues that are secondary (Al-furu'u)
Fasting on Saturdays alone is termed to be a detestable act (Makruh) by Al-hanabila, Shafi'iyyah and Hanafiyyah For the hadith that's goes thus :

The prophet SAW said:
" Do not fast on Saturdays except in what was ordained on you (compulsory fast), even if its a part of grape or a fruit
gotten from a tree, he/she should eat it
And the Maliki school have their reservations towards it and their submission is that its permissible and not detested
It was reported that when Imam Malik was told about the Hadith of prohibition of fast on Saturday he said: This is a lie
With the proof that if the prophet SAW was to say that the hadith would come in a way that the one of prohibition on fasting the day of juma'ah alone carries. That's there should be a clause stating either you fast a day before Saturday or after Saturday.
But since it wasn't mentioned there is no truth in it.

Again, a lot of scholars fault the hadith prohibiting Saturday fast and they call it a shaky hadith (Idtirāb) this was explained by Ibn hajar Al-asqalāniyy in his (At-talkhees Al-khabeer)
and it was also the opinion of Ibn shihābud deen Az-zuhuriyyu and that of Ibn Al-qayyim and his teacher Ibn taimiyyah.
But there is no dispite that Ramadan fast or the 60 fast of kaffarah must be fasted even on Saturdays.
So the ground of argument is on the voluntary/sunnah fast
Like ; Ashurāh, Day of Arafah and others.

Haven said that, our stand here is that fasting a voluntary/sunnah fast on Saturdays might be detestable but it is permissible if you are gonna fast a day before it (Juma'ah) or a day after it (Sunday) for the following reasons:
1. It was mentioned that the prophet SAW prohibited fasting on Fridays only.

Abu hurairah R.A said: I heard the prophet SAW saying: " None of you should fast on Fridays except he / she fast a day before it (Thursdays) or a day after it (Saturdays).

Bukhari and Muslim

This hadith is directly stating that we can fast on Saturdays even though
we aren't ranging an obligatory fast.

From juwairiyyah daughter of Al-hārith reported that the prophet SAW came to her on a Friday while she was fasting, the prophet said: Did you fast yesterday? She replied; No. He said: do you have the intention of fasting tomorrow ?
She replied; No. He said: then drop the fast and eat.

Al-bukhari related.

This hadith also have the mention of (Saturdays) on it, since the tomorrow of Friday is Saturday. Had she said she is fasting on Saturdays the prophet SAW would have allowed her to continue her fast.
2. The prophet SAW was reported to fast much on Saturdays and Sundays. This is contain in the hadith of Ummu Salamah:

Ummu Salamah R.A said: The prophet SAW use to fast on Saturdays with Sundays more than any day of the week. And he SAW will say: " They are celebrated days of the mushrikeen,
and I love to be different from them".

The hadith was narrated by Ahmad, Ibn Hibban, Ibn Huzaimah and Al-baihaqiyy.

This hadith according to scholars is more sound and stronger than the one where prohibition was mentioned. It even caused one of the scholars to say that this
particular hadith abbrogates the first one where prohibition was mentioned.

But we won't go buy abrogation but we would only stick to the detectability if one fasts the days (Saturdays) alone as a voluntary/sunnah
So, as we all know, in Nigeria Saturday is our 9th day of muharram and Sunday is 10th. Its is important we fast the day of Ashurah because it expiate the sins of the previous and current year as mentioned by the prophet SAW.
The 10th day is the Ashurah but the prophet SAW prefers
to fast the 9th day and the 10th so as to be different from the Jews who are the innovators of the fast.

The 10th day is the Ashurah but the prophet SAW prefers to fast the 9th day and the 10th so as to be different from the Jews who are the innovators of the fast.
Scholars also mentioned that since being different from the Jews was the aim of the Prophet SAW, though he didn't get to fast the 9th day the following year before returning to Allah, they sees this as a ground of ijtihād where one can also fast the 10th day and 11th day because
it also makes one different from the Jews.

And as the situation have it now, for those of us who are fasted today (Friday) and will fast tomorrow as 10th of muharram following the other world declaration of date, its will still be good they fast on Sunday if they can,
And for us fasting tomorrow (Saturday) as 9th in Nigeria and (Sunday) as 10th its also okay because by the time the ones who followed the calendar as declared by other countries fasts on Sunday it would look like they fasted the 11th day too which is not prohibited.
We would stop here, May Allah bless us with the understanding of the religion Amin.
