I have many questions about Jacob Blake’s death. It must be thoroughly investigated. People must be held accountable for any wrongdoing.

Demanding justice is appropriate. It’s also vital that we get the context + history right.

There will NEVER be "Another Emmett Till"... (1/6)
First: Conclusions absent facts — this isn’t justice. The Blake investigation is ongoing.

Second: There will NEVER be another Emmett Till.

To say otherwise diminishes the importance of Till’s death. The immense progress made since. And the enormous sum paid to get HERE... (2/6)
Imperfect though it may be, we live in a far more equitable + just world than any of our predecessors. We owe that privilege to legions of activist + martyrs of every color & creed. King, Lovejoy, Till, Liuzzo...

Ahistorical embellishment dishonors our rich inheritance... (3/6)
Here, a well-intentioned but erroneous sentiment illustrates a disturbing trend. People eager to say + do good, uncritically lurch to conclusions about racial bias, indulge in obvious overstatement, and promulgate insidious *anti-racist* ideas... (4/6)
The Good News: We've advanced far beyond the point where 'another Emmett Till' is even conceivable.

That Bad News: Confused ideas about the *centrality of race* + scaremongering about *white supremacy* are impairing our ability to SEE or ADMIT how far we've already come... (5/6)
Whether we know it or not, this is dangerous territory. The race monomania that's taken root in our society is more in line w/ Richard Spencer’s vision for America than MLK or Rustin's.

And it was Rustin who urged us to be *enraged by injustice, but not undone by it.* (6/6)
Regrettable Error: Mr Blake has not died.
