The reported position was 25 nautical miles away from the #LouiseMichel which was heading north.

Even though the position was clearly inside a European SAR zone, no one replied to the Mayday call.
As seafarers, it was our responsibility to render assistance to whoever is in distress at sea.

Once our rescue team assessed and reported the situation, I sent a Mayday Relay on behalf of the boat.

We first received a reply from the authorities in Lampedusa asking for more information. And then: they told us, they are not responsible.
I lost track how many emails and phone calls I made. 8/x
We recovered the body. And then we decided to take the women and children on board the Louise. There was no help in sight, we were on our own. 9/x
The situation on the boat deteriorated. The wind picked up. The flimsy Rubber boat was shaking like hell.

So we took on board as many as we could, without endangering our vessel. For those remaining, we deployed liferafts. We sheltered them, gave them water, food and medical treatment - and hopefully - some hope.
