The provisional number of deaths registered in England and Wales in the week ending 21 August 2020 (Week 34) was 9,631.

This was

▪️ 239 more than Week 33
▪️ 474 more than the five-year average for Week 34

The number of deaths registered in week 34 was 5.2% above the five-year average (474 deaths higher).

This is the second consecutive week that weekly deaths have been above the five-year average, however, the rise was not driven by #COVID19 ow.ly/Kwy950Bfy4V

Of the deaths registered in Week 34, 138 mention #COVID19 on the death certificate (1.4% of all deaths).
This has fallen since the previous week (Week 33) when 1.5% of all deaths mentioned COVID-19 ow.ly/VvYF50Bfya3

Of deaths involving #COVID19 registered up to Week 34, 33,076 deaths (63.4%) occurred in hospital with the remainder mainly occurring in care homes (15,460), private homes (2,468) and hospices (746) ow.ly/gKBx50Bfye6

In the majority of English regions the number of deaths involving #COVID19 decreased or remained the same, with two of the nine regions having fewer overall deaths than the five-year average ow.ly/dE7D50BfyjV

In Wales, there were 11 deaths registered in Week 34 involving #COVID19, a decrease compared with the 14 deaths registered in Week 33 ow.ly/MZMA50Bfyos

In England, of all deaths that occurred up to 21 August (registered up 29 August), 49,579 involved #COVID19.

For the same period, @DHSCgovuk reported 36,782 COVID-19 deaths (where the death occurred within 28 days of receiving a positive test) ow.ly/J3S650Bfyzf
