Understanding HYDROCEPHALUS (BIG HEAD in Babies/Children) and what causes it.

There has been a lot of this children who you see with big heads that are bigger than even that of an adult & the only sad thing is that most people would tag or link it to a spiritual attack from....

their village or elsewhere, and be going to different herbal homes & trying different concoctions.

hence, I have decided that I would be writing more on these medical conditions that is mostly tagged as spiritual attacks, and we would be starting with this one.

Now, what is HYDROCEPHALUS

Hydrocephalus is an abnormal accumulation of fluid within the brain cavity.
It commonly affects children from first week of life till about two years. It can also happen at any age including in adult

It is not from any spiritual attack or witchcraft & was not done to you by any enemy.
In the villages, some pregnant women would be told that if you look at someone with the condition, u'd have it

This is not true.

The condition is very treatable with good outcome when diagnosis is made early.

What Happens in Hydrocephalus?
Human beings normally produce a fluid in the brain that is called CEREBROSPINAL FLUID. This fluid helps the brain to feel light in the head & not scratch itself on the

..bone of the skull.
The fluid also helps to remove waste products from the brain.
This fluid has a connection (just like pipes in your house), from where it is removed.
Whenever this connection (pipes) is blocked for any reason at all, this fluid will now accumulate in the head

..& d head will now begin to swell, compressing d brain.
This is commonly seen in children, especially in the early months/years of life

Cause:
Common causes in our region are infections, especially those which are not properly treated when the child is still a few months old.

Examples of these Infections are: MENINGITIS.
Other possible causes are congenital tumours (these are growths in the head that the child is born with), among others.

Symptoms of Hydrocephalus:
The symptoms you see in a child with hydrocephalus are;

- refusal of food,
- increasing head size on daily basis,
- large head out of proportion to body size,
- bulging head,
- vomiting,
- inability to sit down, stand or walk and
- general body weakness, among others.

Prevention:
You can’t exactly prevent hydrocephalus.....

..but you can lower your child’s risk for developing the condition by;
- Preventing head injuries, which can also lead to hydrocephalus
- Vaccinating children against meningitis, a common cause, is also very important for parents, especially in this Covid-19 period.

- Make sure you get prenatal care during pregnancy. This can help reduce d chance of going into premature labour, which can lead to hydrocephalus.

Treatment
There is currently no known way to cure hydrocephalus & the main treatment option today requires brain surgery.

With early detection and appropriate intervention, d future for many is promising.

There are currently three forms of surgical treatment used to manage hydrocephalus.
- The most common treatment procedure is the surgical implantation of a device called a shunt.

A shunt is a flexible tube placed into d CSF system of d brain, which would help drain the accumulating CSF into another region of the body, mostly the abdomen, where it can be absorbed.

If u have or know anyone with this condition, go to the hospital & See a doctor immediately

Your doctor would be able to enlighten you more on the best treatment option!

Pls dont go to a prayer ground or one herbal home & be rubbing any concoction or leaves that will not work & months later, when the conditions have worsened, you would now expect doctors to do miracle.

Remember, This condition is completed treatable, and it is best to start treatment when the size of the head has not increased very much which can lead to brain damage.

Once d brain damages, it cannot be repaired.
