The system that is our society is broken.
In the *hour* it took for this to happen, Tesla gained $Billions in market value. I do not have a problem with that. I do have a problem with it happening while most people are subject to outrages like this, unable to meet basic needs.
Of course it is complicated. But not really. Of course you can find examples of people scamming the system, lazy etc. But that is not even the beginning of the real issues/problem.

The the reason it is complicated: We are very unwilling to work out the systemic problem
at the right level. We look to anecdotal stories to underling and enforce beliefs, while having a hard time confronting the systemic suffering the society, as currently configured, imposes on many, becoming most, of its citizens.

Remember, forever ago, in March, how there was
a new found understanding and respect for "essential workers"?
Remember all the signs & reports of appreciation, evincing some slight awareness that the grinding of the engine that enables all the finery & upper classes of our society are firmly planted on the levels of society
where these people live. Where these people work.

Some, few relatively, got extra pay, to take the risk of being exposed to Covid while doing their jobs. Others were forced to do their jobs with no more benefit than the occasional "Hey, Thanks!".
And now many of these jobs
have evaporated, and now they are subject to eviction, as this report demonstrates. Not only eviction, but a perpetuation of the suffering of the society. If it was hard breaking out of this level of poverty before, education and etc., it is impossible now.
When you are evicted from the lowest level of shelter...where do you go?

And at what point does the society recognize its failures?

The hard reality is with the increase in technology entire segments of the economy will no longer need most of these jobs to function. Soon, the
trucking industry, for example, one of the largest employers of non-technical people, will be going away.
The hard fact is soon our society will not need a significant percentage of people to function. They will not even be "essential workers" any more.
I don't think we will readily face the class divides that are coming when that happens. WE are not ready to face the dystopia that will be created while the utopia of progress and ever more technological, medical, and life supporting advances are happening, just over there...
in a completely different world.
I suppose to find an analoge you could look at Brazil. I experienced it in Bogata Columbia. I have seen it in America traveling on Amtrack from NY to DC.

I know we spend immense amounts of $$ on the problem. Sadly most of it doesn’t address
and certainly does not solve, the problem.

Covid has changed the functional systems and paradigms of much of how our world functions. We are adapting to new realities in virtually every sector.
One reality that we have not figured out how to grapple with is this human one.
What do we do with people, like this, who cannot pay their rent?

Eviction only solves a small part of the problem. Mostly the landlord's problem.

What happens next?

We have not had to contend w this question in the way we are going to be forced to. I don't think we are ready.
