Rise of Magadh and Haryanka Dynasty- Part I
Early Budhist Litrature,Maharshi Panini and Aitreya Brahman make mention of 22 Janpadas in North Bharat in which Kashi, Koshal and Videh (north Bihar) were mainland of Vedic education and culture. Amongst them 16 republics were
called Mahajanpadas which were super powerful and center of trades. Before rise of Magadh, Vats(Kaushambi), Avanti( Ujjain) and Koshal(Awadh) were mighty kingdoms.
Magadh foundation was laid by Shishunag but rise of imperial Magadh begins with his 5th descendent Bimbisar in 547
Century. Binbisar was very ambitious and adopted the policy of expansionism. The Vedic term Rajan didn't satisfy him and he preferred Chakravartin Samrat. He performed many Aswamedh ceremonies to take over border kingdoms. As per his expansionism he started winning brides from
defeated states of prestigious clans. He had large number of sons and daughters who further expanded their dominions. He attacked Anga(East Bihar) and Champa and won them.
Looking at his fame King of Koshal gave the hand of his daughter to Bimbisar along with most
fertile territories of Kashi as a part of Dowry.
The Licchavi King Chetan married of his daughter Chellena to Bimbisar along with many principal area of Bihar and Ganga valley. King of Avanti, Pradyota maintained friendly relations with Bimbisar. New Rajgriha was built by king
Along with magnificent metropolis and huge military complex.
Bimbisar's eldest son Ajatshatru was born from Licchavi queen of Vajji,he was a daredevil and pursued imperial policy of his father. Bimbisar had contant pressure from various states about his succession. Ajatshatru
claimed his succession being eldest but he was not born of Koshal queen. At that time Kashi was main source of income for Magadh which fetched ₹ 1 lac per annum and Kashi belonged to Koshal princess. Many sons of Bimbisar were growing their influence and claim to succession
became more desperate. Ajatshatru had established himself and with help of his aids he infamously killed Bimbisar. He took over Kashi and the crown. King Prasenjet, brother of Koshal Princess declared war upon Ajatshatru to avenge his brother in law but got defeated eding up
marrying his daughter with Ajatshatru, lead to decline of Koshal and a step ahead to mightier Magadh.
Special mention: Bimbisar met Gautam Buddha many times but before his enlightenment.
