A growing thread of observations on the public RoamFM graph, its conversations, and everything in between (will add more over time for #roamcult):
1. Top names mentioned when asked how a guest discovered Roam (no order): @shuomi3, @vgr, @adam_keesling, @nateliason, @fortelabs x @Conaw beef

It's either Shu's quick videos, viral tweet threads, Nat's post or BASB power propelling Roam as a tool.
2. Majority of guests jumped from @evernote and @NotionHQ to Roam either:
- 100%
- Hybrid (eg. Notion for teams, Evernote for Archive)

A few have mentioned OneNote, physical notebooks.

Most recognized structure-first note-taking didn't fit their brains, and Roam was the answer
3. Gradual deconstruction of note-taking definitions turned the tool from 'just putting in notes' to 'this is how I think' (eg. The Aha Moment, The Roam Itch)

Most were looking to solve problems note-taking tools traditionally deal with first (surface-level) before going deeper
4. A few found the concept of daily notes weird at first

eg. comparing it to writing in a diary, faced with a date and blank page = wtf do I do

Took a while to understand the importance of the date as a metatag
5. We find it hard to articulate possibilities Roam gives us to non-Roamans

When asked to describe how to describe it, answers ranged from Second Brain to Roam to non-Roamers, #BASB became the closest simplification of that feeling.
6. All of my guests so far have focused on explaining their workflows and rationales in private Roam graphs

Only one guest has described it in a collaborative graph (@JESSCATE93 for RoamCN), and an upcoming guest who's running an entire startup on one Roam graph(!!) 👀
7. Related to 5, When asked what Roam means to them, there is a certain calm behind each answer.

Intricacies in tonality (warmth and excitement) from each answer indicate a feeling similar to 'I've finally found my home'

Found a place where frantic note-taking is accepted
8. Guests come in with initial reason in mind:
- Field-specific (eg. Teaching history, PhD Research)
- PKM (Note-taking, Productivity systems, efficiency)

Once they've tried the features, it bleeds out to other areas
- Journaling
- Thought loss anxiety
- Memories

Micro -> Macro
9. Limitations of a podcast: If workflow explanations get too technical, may need visual element as a complement to the show

I feel the show would not be able to work without shownotes and transcript MINIMUM

A video demo would be +++, need to bring these in

Roaming 🎶

On the go🎶
Immediate behavioral changes: all my quick notes and random findings throughout the day I send it directly to Roam instead of drafts

Easier to send everything to DNP so I can sort and organize them EOD

Haven’t tried long sessions with a keyboard yet
Currently out and whipped out my laptop to sync my notes

Had both instances of Roam (had it running before I opened the laptop) and mobile Roam open

10s after connecting to the internet, immediate syncing between the both of them

Ahhh life is bliss

🧐 I have a feeling we explored this question in the convo with @beauhaan on the relationship between identity and note taking

We write to find ourselves, idolize those who have already done so, and will fight for our semantics and systems because really it’s us in written form
Maybe I’ll do a livestream to explore the question “Why you care about taking notes” next week
Hmmm. What else to add Image

Unconventional ways to grow your knowledge graph:

1/ Learn a language with a completely different structure. Recognise implicit and explicit meanings, contexts, and forms.

Apply that understanding to your semantics. Your notes are the language of perception of the world
2/ Watch a kid play with toys. If they stop using it as intended, they will imagine 20 ways to have fun with it.

Do the same. Your notes don’t have to stick to the same framework, line of thinking, and angle all the time. They are fleeting toys designed to occupy your time
3/ Record yourself saying your notes out loud.

Outliners are designed to ‘format’ connections we inherently understand on our screen. Saying them out loud makes them explicit, tangible.

What if in that moment, your words change and drift off into something unwritten? CHASE IT

In today's episode of playing with CSS, oh god what did I do oh god @CatoMinor3 😂
My CSS chops aren't good enough to make the ref section a 'pseudo-window' where I can quickly look at it by scrolling horizontally to the left hmm...gonna play around with the numbers a bit
This looks not bad actually...I can live with it

Just had some problems with main page width - now I'm stuck on always full if I'm willing to stick with this layout from now on hmm

Introducing a new project: Roam Dervish! A twist to the standard @RoamResearch coaching.

If you want to elevate your workflows, thinking, and converse with your notes on a deeper level with guidance, you've come to the right place!

There are two types of coaching shared below: Image
1 - General Roam Coaching

If you're in need of upgrading your workflow, this is for you 🚀

If you need workflow advancements, feature deep dives, Roam-related ideas fleshed out, this is it!

The goal is to develop your own unique Roam! More in this vid:
They stem from both my show (RoamFM) as well as the growing YouTube playlist + livestreams where I think out loud in public and show how I use the tool.

Here's an example of my workflows in action:

This series is now released! Enjoy my foray into creating a custom setup for your note-taking tool (for me it's @RoamResearch 😊) #roam

Let's go through what they cover:
The first is on your note-taking principles!

I explore the relationship between our information diet (what you take in intentionally/as a default), semantics and more for note-taking purposes, because what we perceive is what we take note of!
Next is taking the above and applying it to a digital context, in my case it's #roam !

How do you prepare your notes for recall? What does it mean to write notes primed for integration? Do you consider context-dependent insight (h/t @cortexfutura)?
