I want to clear up any confusion about the latest non-congregate sheltering order that is getting some attention.
I am aware there are internet rumors that incorrectly claim these orders allow children to be separated from parents without permission. This is not in our order and there is no truth to the rumor. Families will not be separated, and kids will not be away from their loved ones.
This order creates a funding mechanism to allow for federal reimbursement for those looking to create places for people to safely isolate or quarantine. It has been used in a handful of cases in Ohio, but not in any large-scale way.
Having quarantine housing options gives people the choice of a safe, comfortable place to recover from the virus while others can stay in the original housing.
The bottom line, neither FEMA nor ODH are going to set up “FEMA camps” for anyone to quarantine against their will. What we are doing is making available a safe place for people to stay when they have loved ones they are trying to protect and they have no other place to go.

FLU: While the flu can be deadly on its own, we also are concerned that Ohioans who get both the flu and #COVID19 at the same time could become severely, if not fatally, ill. Anyone who can get vaccinated against the flu should do so.
The @CDCgov advises anyone who can and is six months or older get vaccinated against the flu, including pregnant women, whose vaccinations can protect their babies in the time after birth. It’s also extremely important to get vaccinated if you are an essential worker.
If you are elderly and need help getting to your physician or a location that offers flu shots, we encourage older Ohioans to contact their local Area Agency on Agency at
866-243-5678. They can connect you with resources in your area for transportation and other services.

We will be issuing an order that requires schools to establish a reporting mechanism for parents to report #COVID19 cases. After learning of a student or staff member who tested positive, K-12 schools must report that case to the local health department as quickly as possible.
Schools should make information about a positive case publicly available and should notify parents/guardians in writing about the case and include as much information as possible without disclosing protected health information.
The local health department will then notify @OHDeptofHealth on a weekly basis about newly reported cases in schools, as well as the cumulative casa data for students/teachers. This data will be posted every Wednesday at coronavirus.ohio.gov.

This map shows the breakdown of how public schools are approaching the upcoming school year: in-person return (yellow) vs. fully remote learning (blue) vs. a hybrid model (green).
Based on what we know today, we have 325 districts in the state who are planning to return full-time. That’s about 590,000 public school students or 38 percent.
We have 55 districts or about 25.6 percent (approximately 398,000 students) of our public school students that will be fully remote or online.

UPDATE: In a second COVID-19 test administered today in Columbus, Governor Mike DeWine has tested negative for COVID-19. First Lady Fran DeWine and staff members have also all tested negative.
A PCR test was administered to the Governor and members of his staff this afternoon. The PCR test looks for the specific RNA for the SARS CoV-2 -- in other words, the genetic material specific for the virus that causes COVID-19.
The PCR test is known to be extremely sensitive, as well as specific, for the virus. The PCR tests for the Governor, First Lady, and staff were run twice. They came back negative the first time and came back negative when they were run on a second diagnostic platform.

Here are 3 examples of spread within family and friend groups that we learned about this week.
1 - A son lived with his father who was in hospice care at home. For 2 days before his father died, the son was coughing (thinking he had bronchitis) as family members visited to pay respects. Five family members later tested positive for #COVID19, including a great-nephew.
Then, a party with 4 attendees was held at the great nephew’s house, and someone there also tested positive. Since then, 2 others, including a child, have tested positive, and 17 other contacts are being monitored for illness.
