A instancia de mi colega @salazar_elena y de la gran @flaviafrei hice un verdadero esfuerzo serio para seleccionar textos en español.

Si diera el curso en inglés usaría otros textos (ver mi blog).

Creo que siempre debemos leer a Gerring, a Maxwell, y a KKV vs C/B vs Geddes
Ok, después de ir a caminar un buen rato, aquí van las recomendaciones.

1) Coincido 100% con mi colega @salazar_elena en recomendar a Barbara Geddes con Paradigms and Sand Castles. Si bien Geddes es (como yo) comparativista, su libro examina diseño de investigación en general.
2) Coincido también con la recomendación de Winship y Morgan sobre "counterfactuals" (los contrafácticos) y The Book of Why de Judea Pearl.

Laura Escamilla también recomendó a quienes yo incluyo en mi temario (Maxwell y Gerring).

Además, otras sugerencias:
- King, G., Keohane, R. O., & Verba, S. (2005). El diseño de la investigación social. La inferencia científica en los estudios cualitativos. Madrid, España: Alianza Editorial.

- normalmente uno compararía KKV contra Brady and Collier "Rethinking Social Inquiry". SIN EMBARGO...
Yo creo que realmente si uno quiere enseñar bien, bien metodología en ciencia política/ciencia social, tiene que comparar y enseñar KKV+C/B+Geddes. Así mero, no se puede dejar fuera a Geddes, lo siento.

Estos son algunos de los textos que incluyo en mi temario, que espero que les sean de utilidad.

Hay muchísimo material, el punto es que necesitamos realmente enfocarnos en elementos clave:
- qué queremos explicar
- qué explicaciones alternativas existen
- qué dice la teoría.
Y bueno, cuando salgan mis libros de métodos (en inglés y en español) ya verán cómo enlazo todo lo que he aprendido sobre métodos.

First of all, you may have noticed I did not have a "Reading Notes" blog post of @biblioracle 's excellent book, "The Writer's Practice", which I HAVE read, recommended numerous times AND tweeted about. I think I never got around writing that post, which I'll do now.
I have become a MUCH better writer by PRACTICING WRITING.

I write a metric ton of text.

I write a blog. I write journal articles, book chapters, and I'm writing three books (don't ask, I'm just... unable to say "no" to interesting opportunities).

I have explained before...
... that I firmly believe we can ALL develop A WRITING PRACTICE.

In order to learn how to develop a system to regularly produce text, you DO need guidance. The books I'm going to write about and the posts I'm going to link to will explain how to develop this writing practice.

Every few months, I launch an #AICCSED Challenge.

What does this mean? For me, my simple system of #2ThingsADay often means that the only two things I get done in a day is reading a paper (and annotating) using the AIC method, and dropping it into a CSED spreadsheet.
What we do in the #AICCSED challenge:

We drop a tweet reporting which article we read and we (often, not required) post a screenshot of the CSED (Excel Dump) row associated with said article.

What's the purpose? To keep us reading, synthesizing and summarizing EVERY SINGLE DAY
What an #AICCSED challenge is NOT - it's not intended to stress you out - we're in the midst of a pandemic, we're short on time, we're all stressed out.

Having now finished reading "Bird by Bird" by Anne Lamott, I am now ready to write the thread I was thinking of, comparing memoir-type writing advice books.

So buckle up, grab a coffee/tea/strong beverage of your choice, because I. HAVE. THOUGHTS.
I started reading books on "how to do a PhD", "how to become a successful academic" type of books only recently (2017-ish?) I recall that I used to write research methods books during grad school, but I only read few books on "how you can finish your thesis in 15 minutes or less"
I've returned to this genre not only as a reader, but also as an author, and I'm now writing and finishing my own TWO BOOKS (one in Spanish, one in English - and yes, they're both being written in each language independently ).

What I now realize is that I was wrong before.

I say that it's weird that I literally *just* bought one of the books that was recommended to me the most. After reading dozens of books about writing, and after writing hundreds of blog posts about the academic process.

I am SO GLAD I did.

Anne Lamott is a treasure, really.
This piece of wisdom for which Lamott is globally well known, is INCREDIBLE:

As someone whose work gets systematically overlooked even in my own research areas (which is absurd if you think about it because one way or another, that paper is going to come my way as a reviewer), I do NOT like the "nobody has written about X before", as per @jeffguhin
I am fine with "I thought this was a cool idea" as a motivation for a study. HOWEVER... if you are going to claim novelty (which you are supposed to do), THEN you need to do a thorough literature review, where you may find "oh wow, X, Y and Z ALSO thought this was a cool idea!"
"NEVERTHELESS, the way I approach this cool idea is W, whereas X, Y and Z approach it as R. Therefore, I think my cool idea using approach W may be a contribution to the literature and here is the evidence/theoretical framework/argument/data to prove it"

One of the components of writing that my students struggle with the most is CREATING PARAGRAPHS. This thread is intended to serve as a showcase of various frameworks and methods to craft good paragraphs.

As I always do, I'm going to use examples of other scholars' writing.
I had intended to write this thread a while ago but reading this article by Anindita Sarkar really cemented in me the importance of showing how to write good paragraphs.

The paragraph I highlighted has a central idea: to understand water access you need a gendered lens.
In this paragraph, Sarkar outlines the core idea of her paragraph, by sequentially and carefully making her argument:

1) everyday practices of women accessing water are defined by physical/economic access, but also mediated by the social spaces within which these women operate.
