1. Facebook has permitted a large network of Facebook pages and groups — with names like Trump's Deplorable Army, To The Death Media, and One Angry Conservative — to spread disinformation about voting in the 2020 election to millions of people.

popular.info/p/large-networ…
2. The network operates by funneling traffic to Conservative Brief, an obscure right-wing website.

Conservatives Brief distorts reports from mainstream sources to sow doubt about the legitimacy of the upcoming election.

3. Over the last 90 days, the network of pages that promote Conservative Brief has generated 30.65 million engagements. That's more engagement than the main New York Times Facebook page generated over the same period of time (26.48 million).

4. Here is how it works. On July 13, the AP reported that California had rejected about 100K absentee ballots submitted in the March presidential primary — about 1.5% of the total. Most of these ballots, 70,330, were rejected because they arrived late.

5. This report was then aggregated on the Conservative Brief on July 14. Author Martin Walsh wrote that the story "lends credence" to Trump's claim that mail-in voting "can pave the way for mass fraud." There is no basis for this claim.

popular.info/p/large-networ…
6. The Conservative Brief story was then shared 48 TIMES across a network of 20 PAGES with the text: "Dems CAUGHT — 100,000 Illegal Ballots Found."

Overall, this false piece has been shared more than 100,000 times on Facebook.

7. Facebook is a $780 billion company and its says that preventing disinformation about voting is a priority but it is unable to root out a network like this.

My newsletter, Popular Information, is doing the work.

8. A few days ago, Zuckerberg pledged Facebook would "attach an informational label to content that seeks to delegitimize the outcome...for example, by claiming that lawful methods of voting will lead to fraud."

popular.info/p/large-networ…
9. None of the 48 posts of this California ballot story had the informational label attached.

After Popular Information sent Facebook 8 examples, Facebook attached the label to those 8 posts.

The other 40 posts still don't have a label

10. In response to this story, Facebook sent Popular Information the following statement.

"After an initial investigation, we found there’s enough evidence to merit a deeper review. While that's ongoing, we're taking enforcement action against the Pages posting this content"

1. One important note about the network of Facebook pages pushing voting disinformation that I exposed yesterday

Facebook often says it does not profit from disinformation

This network proves it is not true.

popular.info/p/large-networ…
2. The biggest page in the network, Trumpian Republicans, was only started in May.

It already has 700K followers.

How did Trumpian Republicans grow so big, so fast?

BY PAYING FACEBOOK 75 THOUSAND DOLLARS

popular.info/p/large-networ… Image
3. Zuckerberg in July: "We do not profit from misinformation or hate."

This isn't true.

They've created a system where, if you pay Facebook enough money, you can set up a large misinformation network within a few weeks.

1. Yesterday, Georgia's Secretary of State announced that 1K people voted twice & they would be prosecuted for felony crimes that carry a sentence of up to 10 years

It's a pretty dramatic claim

But when you examine it closely, it completely falls apart

popular.info/p/seeing-doubl…
2. First, you have to understand how voting works in Georgia. If you show up at a polling place and your absentee ballot is already been received, the poll worker is supposed to let you know and you aren't allowed to vote.

popular.info/p/seeing-doubl…
3. If you are allowed to vote and your absentee ballot comes in later, it is not supposed to be counted.

So if anyone had their vote counted twice it is a result of ERRORS BY ELECTION OFFICIALS OVERSEEN BY THE SECRETARY OF STATE

1. The real scandal isn't what Trump said about veterans.

It's what he did to them.

popular.info/p/the-real-sca…
2. Trump pushed hydroxychloroquine on thousands of veterans who contracted COVID-19.

The treatment continued even AFTER a VA study found that hydroxychloroquine was associated with HIGHER death rates

popular.info/p/the-real-sca…
3. How many vets that were given hydroxychloroquine died? We don't know because the Trump administration refuses to say.

But more than 3,000 veterans have died of COVID-19 under the care of the VA.

1. Facebook announced it would no allow any new political ads during the week before the election.

This move is intended to communicate that Facebook is doing something about the use of ads to spread disinformation but will make no practical difference
2. Facebook has created a system where campaigns and committees can micro-target thousands of ad variants EVERY DAY. The Trump campaign has 100s of thousands of ad variants that it can continue to run during the last week. And it can stockpile an unlimited # before the last week.
3. Facebook's policy is to allow candidate ads to continue to run even if they are ruled false by Facebook's independent fact-checkers. These false ads can also run during the last week.

1. The Trump campaign has accepted thousands of dollars from neo-Nazi leader Morris Gulett.

Gulett set up an outpost of the Aryan Nations in Louisiana and touted it as the "most-feared and revered white supremacist organization the world has ever known."

popular.info/p/trump-campai…
2. Gulett's website promoted white Anglo-Saxons as "the supreme ruling race." He said that he would celebrate Black History Month when "when every Negro becomes just that – history."

Now, the Trump campaign has accepted over $2K in donations from Gulett

3. Gullet is also virulently anti-Semitic, ending every sermon with a Nazi salute. His website asserted that "the Jew is the literal child of Satan and is the natural enemy of the White race, the Children of God."

1. Facebook talks a lot about everything its doing to stop disinformation on COVID-19

But it doesn't appear to be working

Health disinformation gets massive distribution on Facebook, according to a new report, swamping authoritative sources

popular.info/p/as-the-pande…
2. @Avaaz looked at the top 10 health disinformation websites, and compared them the top 10 websites of leading health authorities (CDC, WHO, etc)

The disinformation websites generated FOUR TIMES as many views

popular.info/p/as-the-pande…
3. In the context of a pandemic, this kind of disinformation is particularly dangerous. An article by RFK Jr. falsely claiming Bill Gates was sneaking a "sterilization formula" into vaccines generated 3.6 million views.
