@jasonhickel you are the latest in a long line of western scholars to discover that the atmosphere is a global commons. We did so 11 years ago. We are even cited in AR5. @JMauskar @KanitkarT @3rdworldnetwork @nit_set
Alongside us were our Chinese colleagues Pan Jia Hua and others. Our colleagues from Barcelona followed more recently @jxercav. Strange how scholars simply miss us.
Authors like Mathews, Myles Allen etc have all written on the sharing of the global carbon budget without a single line of acknowledgement even though they know of us through colleagues and AR5.
What gets me is that it never occurred to people to check that someone from the South may have thought through this basic point of such importance to us. Indeed you don't have a single Southern author in your references in your Lancet paper!!
The idea has a history prior to us too, which we recount in a chapter in Handbook of Climate Change and India ed by Navriz Dubash.
The ultimate ignominy is that my own students in India will cite your "prestigious" reference in my assignments, ignoring my, that is their teacher's, work.

Pandemic Lesson 1: The moment an "emergency" is declared, the first essential commodity in short supply is equity and social justice. Climate "emergency" will be no better. @3rdworldnetwork @n_thanki @nit_set @boseindrajit @ClimateJustInfo
Pandemic Lesson 2: Arriving at a "civilisational moment" does not imply that the world realises this, or that it reacts in a civilised way. @3rdworldnetwork @n_thanki @nit_set @boseindrajit @ClimateJustInfo
Pandemic Lesson 3: It is difficult to imagine a world more ill-placed to confront the challenge of a lifetime for humanity today. Authoritarian leaders, bewildered thought leaders, movements beaten into retreat. @3rdworldnetwork @n_thanki @nit_set @boseindrajit @ClimateJustInfo
