I angered many climate catastrophists with my claim "The cause of dangerous wildfires is not the one degree of global warming in the last 150 years--it is bad, 'green' forest management." But as I will explain in this thread, this is 100% true.
Gavin Newsom and other California leaders are blaming the dangerous, out-of-control wildfires in CA on climate change. But temperatures have risen 1 degree C in the last 150 years. Is it really possible that that amount of warming makes dangerous wildfires inevitable? No.
With proper forest management we can prevent anything resembling the dangerous, out-of-control wildfires we are experiencing today. And we could do so even if the CA climate were far more fire-prone than it is today. (It has actually been far more fire-prone in the past.)
The key to limiting the danger of wildfires is managing the forest so as to lower the "fuel load"--the amount of dead wood debris that exists in a given area. This can be done by regular "controlled burns" or by manually removing the debris as is often done in logging operations.
Terrible forest management is the root cause of today's wildfires. Policymakers have prevented controlled burns, debris clearing, and logging--jacking up the "fuel load" to incredibly dangerous levels. The obvious solution is rational forest management.
Unfortunately, CA policymakers, instead of admitting that the root cause of our wildfire problems is their bad forest management policies--something fully within their control to fix--blame rising CO2 levels, a minor factor that they have no real ability to affect for decades.
Why do I say rising CO2 levels and temps are a minor factor? Because it’s hard to determine any definite influence. Temps are rising slowly, and rising temps tend to cause more precipitation. The influence is certainly tiny compared to irrational forest management.
The negative effect of rising global temperatures on California wildfire susceptibility in particular is dubious because past centuries had far more fire-prone climates. The Palmer Drought Index shows a slight decrease in California drought severity since 1900.
Historical evidence shows us that prior to manmade CO2 emissions CA experienced regular "megadroughts" that could last over a century. The modern era has been very lush by comparison. Even if CA could lower global CO2 levels we could easily suffer a regional drought.
If CA policymakers want to fix forest management *and* slow rising CO2 levels, the only way to do that would be to liberate low-carbon energy innovation, especially in reliable nuclear. Instead, CA policymakers have criminalized nuclear and are shutting down CA's nuclear plants.
CA policymakers' "solution" to rising CO2 levels has been to mandate that we use a lot of unreliable solar and wind, which makes electricity unaffordable and unreliable. This has caused blackouts *and* has contributed to wildfires by taking money away from powerline maintenance.
The path forward is simple: focus on the main cause, forest management, which is totally within our control. Stop pretending that lowering CO2 levels would bring about some fire-free paradise--and that it is possible near-term. Stop mandating "unreliables." Decriminalize nuclear.
If you'd like to know more about a rational, pro-freedom path forward on energy, environment, and climate, go to EnergyTalkingPoints.com. Please refer your policymakers, especially if, like me, you live in CA. This amazing state is burning in irrationality.

Media coverage of the CA wildfires is designed to do 2 things: 1) Get us to ignore the fundamental role of "green" forest mismanagement in causing the out-of-control fires. 2) Get us to ignore the CA blackouts and the fundamental role of "green energy" policies in causing them.
California is experiencing blackouts because of "green" policies that reward or mandate unreliable electricity from solar and wind and punish or outlaw reliable electricity from nuclear, natural gas, coal, or hydro. We need to understand and apply this lesson this election.
Fact: electricity producers know how to produce enough reliable electricity for virtually any situation--certainly plenty for the heat wave CA has been experiencing this year. All you need to do is build enough reliable power plants: nuclear, natural gas, coal, or hydro.

I disagree with @realDonaldTrump on many, many things. I did not vote for him in 2016. But on energy policy, my area of expertise, I believe he has done more good than any President in memory. Here's what I would say if I were writing his speech tonight. (THREAD)
In the last 15 years America has become the world’s leading energy producer thanks to energy freedom--allowing all sources of energy to compete and innovate. To make even more progress we need more energy freedom--not mandates of renewables or bans of fossil fuels and nuclear.
America’s future depends on America’s energy industry. Energy is the industry that powers every other industry. The lower cost and more reliable our energy is, the more competitive every American company is and the lower the cost of living is for every American.

For a rational take on California forest fires I highly recommend @ShellenbergerMD's new Forbes piece. forbes.com/sites/michaels…

Here's a thread with my high-level take, which incorporates some of the great facts in Mike's piece. THREAD
1: Forest fires are a *natural* phenomenon that "artificial" modern forest management dramatically decreases. Before Europeans arrived in America an estimated 4.4 million acres in CA burned annually. That’s 16 times last year and over twice this year’s extremely high burn.
2: Visibility and air quality problems due to fires in CA used to be far worse. Here's an 1898 account: “Of the hundreds of persons who visit the Pacific slope of California every summer to see the mountains, few see more than the immediate foreground and a haze of smoke.”

Why is California experiencing blackouts? In a tweet: Policies that reward or mandate unreliable electricity from solar and wind and punish or outlaw reliable electricity from nuclear, natural gas, coal, or hydro. Here's a 4 tweet breakdown. (THREAD)
1: Electricity producers know how to produce enough reliable electricity for virtually any situation--certainly plenty for the heat wave CA has been experiencing this year. All you need to do is build enough reliable power plants: nuclear, natural gas, coal, or hydro.
2: But CA, attempting a mini-mini-Green New Deal, decided to mandate that a lot of the electricity generated in the state had to come from unreliable solar and wind electricity. This meant that we would become hugely dependent on reliable power plants from other states.

Senator @KamalaHarris, you have said “There's no question I'm in favor of banning fracking." I want to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume the bubble you are in has shielded you from many facts about this vital technology. Here's the truth about fracking. (Thread)
Summary: Fracking is one of the most important technologies in our economy and can be done very safely. Government should ban only dangerous misuses of fracking, not all fracking. A fracking ban is the fastest way to create a global recession and an American depression.
Many politicians, including Joe Biden, support banning fracking--on federal lands or altogether. But fracking is required to produce over 60% of our oil and 75% of our natural gas. A frack ban is the single fastest way to create a global recession and an American depression.

THREAD: The Wind Production Tax Credit is a perverse policy that pays utilities to slow down or shut down reliable power plants whenever the wind blows. It is driving reliable power plants out of business, leading to higher costs and lower reliability.
1: Wind turbines cannot provide the reliable energy that our amazing electrical grid requires 24/7. That’s why every place in the world that uses unreliable wind energy depends 24/7 on massive amounts of reliable energy from coal, gas, hydro, or nuclear plants.
2: Because wind turbines are unreliable they can’t replace our reliable power plants, only duplicate or supplement them at tremendous cost. That’s why the more wind a grid uses the more expensive its electricity tends to be.
