NEW: Trump admin admits it has expelled 8,800 migrant kids from U.S. with little legal oversight or due process, skirting anti-human trafficking law.

Using COVID as excuse, he’s accomplishing what he hoped family separations would force Congress to do. nbcnews.to/3mhQveP
That figure is for unaccompanied kids. They’ve also expelled 7,600 who came as part of a family group. And 159,000 people total since March.
Undermining their own public health justification of the practice, last month @lomikriel and @DLind reported the Trump administration is “only expelling kids who’ve tested negative.” propublica.org/article/ice-is…
Was on assignment at Arizona border when news broke (h/t @camiloreports) that Trump admin admitted it has expelled 8,800 unaccompanied migrant kids despite anti-trafficking law forbidding the practice, using COVID as justification. Went live on #AMJoy and gave @CapehartJ latest.

Very sorry to hear the @latimes shut its Olympic Printing Plant after 30 years. I toured it in 2007, when I was vlog-reporting for @laobserved. It was amazing and everyone was so welcoming and kind, as you can see.
I am clearly doing my best Huell Howser impression in that tour video btw.

South Carolina’s remarkable economic growth is changing the electorate. We went inside BMW’s massive plant (where I took a mallet to a $200K car), and to West Greenville, where the Black population has declined as prices force residents out, to learn more.
“Within the next five years, I believe this neighborhood won’t be recognizable by those who once knew it.”

Six years ago, Trump officials held a Valentine's Day meeting in which deliberately separating migrant kids from parents was proposed. Thousands ultimately were.

Two years after creating a task force to reunite them, Biden's DHS says over 600 have been, but 998 remain separated.
Biden admin's task force, led by @MichelleBrane, says the "number of new families identified continues to increase, as families come forward and identify themselves as separated under the previous administration’s zero-tolerance policy." dhs.gov/news/2023/02/0…
Meanwhile, as it reunites families separated by a Trump policy Biden himself called "criminal," his admin is fighting them in court as they seek financial restitution for trauma they endured. Here's just one example, reported by @ElviaMalagon. chicago.suntimes.com/2023/2/1/23579…

This was a truly remarkable story to report and thing to witness. Researchers at @Stanford think they may have discovered a remarkable breakthrough when it comes to treating Parkinson’s patients — and it’s as simple as putting on a pair of gloves.
Here’s where people interested in being a part of the study by @peter_tass can find more information: med.stanford.edu/tass-lab
You can also e-mail Dr. Tass and his team at parkinsonsvcr@stanford.edu to reach out and connect.

Thanks so much for the feedback to this story and to @AudreyKolina and @XavierNBC for producing it.
