THREAD: Georgia, our home, faces twin crises: of justice and of conscience. Recent horrifying incidents have renewed the urgency of change. Voting will not solve everything, but to build a government able to deliver equality, we must demand it at the ballot box.
#RoderickWalker was beaten by Clayton County sheriff deputies. While the firing of one officer is a step forward, all officers involved—including those who failed to intervene—should be held accountable. I am thinking of Mr. Walker and his family & join the call for justice.
At the privately-run Irwin County Detention Center, a whistleblower has accused ICE of conducting mass hysterectomies on detained immigrants. The dehumanization of women, esp. immigrant & Black women, is not new but never cease to shock the conscience. This must be investigated.
Georgia's sometimes inhumane prison conditions are rapidly deteriorating during #COVID. The serious deprivation of basic necessities such as food + water and inexcusable inaction has been recorded on video. As deaths rise, so does our state's complicity in silence.
Georgians deserve better. This election season, we can flip GA's State House and have more leaders to advocate for all Georgians, send two US Senators to Congress who believe #BlackLivesMatter; and we can remove the Coward-in-Chief in the White House.
Voting is part of the process of ending systemic inequities: protesting in the streets, at the polls and in the halls of power. This isn't just about who wins an election. It's about the lives saved, the injustices avenged, the futures reclaimed.
So we must fight with our votes and our voices. And, together, we will win.

Donald Trump is actively seeking to undermine the U.S. Postal Service, and his actions have understandably caused serious concern among voters who wish to vote by mail. Why is Trump doing this? Because he is a failed president. 1/10
Rather than letting his efforts cause fear and panic, let’s fight back! To combat Trump’s desperate actions, we recommend making a PLAN to vote as early as possible, either by mail, using a drop box, or in person.

Simply put: Why wait? 2/10
If you want to enact change in our country and in your community, the best way to do so is by casting your vote as soon as you can.

We encourage all eligible voters to register and make their plan to vote in the November election now. 3/10

I send love to my neighbors and those in the streets. I see and share your call for more than lip service in response to outrage. We must have systemic change at every level. What we are witnessing in GA is anguish, frustration and anger that demands a voice. 1/5
I recognize this moment because it is not new.

In 1992, Atlanta exploded with an impotent rage when Rodney King’s attackers went unpunished. I led protests, and I challenged leaders for their inaction. 2/5
Then, as now, my fellow Georgians deserve to live in a country where they are no longer targeted, harassed, and murdered at the hands of the state. They want Black lives to be valued.

As polite sympathy turns to cynical outrage + Nixon-esque insults, and anxious protest is dismissed as mindless anarchy, we cannot let our eyes be turned away from the dead, murdered bodies that brought us here. Again. #GeorgeFloyd #AuhmadArbery #BreonaTaylor. 1/4
Rage, hopelessness and a ragged, unrelieved pain on display in Minneapolis has fearsome echoes in Louisville, Brunswick and a hundred American cities. Their deaths are symptomatic of a broken system that promises justice but fails to deliver. 2/4
Those entrusted with the gravest authority must be held to the highest standard of accountability.
Law enforcement, district attorneys, mayors, attorneys general, judges, legislators and governors must be held responsible - and their actions will be on the ballot in November. 3/4

Join me at 5 PM EST with @faircount as I ask YOUR questions about the #2020Census. Use #AskStacey for your chance to ask me a question!

In the meantime, here are some questions submitted by some of my closest friends:
Thank you for your question, @mPinoe. If our children are not counted, they're left out for the next decade.
.@willpowerpacker asks a great question about the #2020Census and how we can secure our political power. #AskStacey

When it comes to voter protection, we often focus on the suppressive efforts of Republican Secretaries of State and don’t stop to recognize the progress of our Democratic friends like @AlexPadilla4CA who have made positive reforms in states across the country. #capol
.@AlexPadilla4CA, who heads @DemsOfState, has led the charge of his counterparts across the country in ensuring free and fair elections for all, with much needed transparency, ingenuity and equity, both in California and beyond.
20.6 million Californians are registered to vote - 82 percent of the eligible population and growing. New this year, CA will have same-day reg, prepaid return envelopes for vote-by-mail and more. I commend these positive reforms.

.@fairfightaction is deploying resources to continue the bipartisan criminal justice reforms that I helped former Gov. Nathan Deal achieve.

Eight years of hard, important work whose progress may now be rolled back with Brian Kemp’s dangerous budget cuts. #gapol 1/
As GA’s House Dem Leader, I served on key committees critical to criminal justice reform, helped pass private probation reforms, remove licensure requirements, improve our parole system, and advocated for true diversity of representation in our courts. 2/
By eviscerating the effective reforms that Governor Deal and I worked together to pass, Kemp’s extreme budget cuts will drain resources from:

❌ public defenders
❌ accountability courts
❌ mental health programs
