Wow
If you need more evidence of #TestingScandal we relocated to another test site in Bolton which chief exec thought opened at 8. It didn’t exist
We went to another due to open at 8
It didn’t exist
He has no idea if, where or when these test centres will open 🤯@BBCBreakfast
And remember this is Bolton the #Covid capital of the UK
They have no idea what the private contractors are doing and even key workers yesterday couldn’t get a test for love nor money @BBCBreakfast
Just want to make that point again
The chief exec of the covid capital of the country has no idea if, where or when 2/4 test facilities will be put back into place here
He had no idea they were gone
Somethings going v badly wrong with this system @BBCBreakfast
World beating?
A local called Mike has just walked over after seeing our earlier report @BBCBreakfast “someone somewhere is making an awful lot of money out of this mess”
Latest from council ... those sites in Bolton WILL reopen .. but later today
More @BBCBreakfast after 9
1 of Bolton’s centres has capacity to test 400 ppl
On Saturday the private contractors never showed up to open it
On Sunday only 40 ppl were tested there
Last night the local hospital warned ppl to stay away because they were being inundated with test requests @BBCBreakfast
There’s frustration, poor communication, anger and that’s despite daily briefings between the private providers the DfH & LA
With covid figures rising daily @BBCBreakfast
Walk in test centre did indeed open but already turning ppl with no appt away
Interesting 1 woman told even if she had appt & CRUCIALLY a QR code for, say, Inverness, she could still come back here
It’s the code that guarantees lab can turn test around not location @BBCBreakfast
But walk in centres certainly not walk in here
That’s all weekend now, in covid capital where rates are 190 per 100,000 and rising
Where the hospital has put out urgent appeal for ppl NOT to go there as they’re being inundated with test requests @BBCBreakfast
They’re waiting for ppl to arrive with an appt... but I’ve just gone on line to tell the site I’m a frontline worker from Bolton who needs an appointment & I got the standard come back later “this service is v busy” response ... no ones arrived with an appt yet @BBCBreakfast
Everyone’s being paid to provide a service they can’t provide, their hands are tied, in the county’s covid capital
Bonkers
One woman just arrived, to be turned away as no appt “I understand ... I’ll try again later... you’re doing a great job. Thankyou” @BBCBreakfast
Cars starting to queue
If they’ve appointment they’re in, if not, they’re out
One worker”we’re trying our best but we do what we’re told to do. Front line workers turn up and we can’t help them. Can you imagine how frustrating that is? We just want to do our jobs” @BBCBreakfast
Final update-all 4 test centres up and running but no walk in offer
“Go on line & check, check, check again. Yesterday afternoon 150 appts came up in one chunk. We just have to wait & see what we get”
Off home to kip bye all 👋 @BBCBreakfast
Final thought
This is all about the lab results. Not tests. The labs can’t cope with the volume of tests.
Now ... Remember something like 97%+ tests will come back negative
I read dead interesting article on innovation in Africa which processed 25 tests in one go... 1/2
If it came back + they did each test again individually
But ... If - (and stats say vast VAST majority will be /) they’ve just shifted 25 tests in one go 👊
Ace innovation speeding up processing there
Could do with a bit of that here?

At 1658 on November 18th Ann made the first of 3 desperate 999 calls for her husband Martin who she thought was having a heart attack
"He was in terrible pain. He was saying I don't think I'll make it"
1 @BBCBreakfast
On a zoom call to Ann in her kitchen with Martin's photo us behind her, I asked her how urgent that call felt?
"Life or death. I thought, I'm going to lose my husband here"

At 1730 she made another call. They still hadn't been able to allocate an ambulance. They asked her if she had any asprin. Give him asprin. She called their son, and he drove straight round and said Mum we've got to get Dad to hospital

A thread -
In 2018 @mencap_charity introduced me to Pat & Ken Booth
I was trying to find parents of people with a learning disability who’d died prematurely
They told me about their Little Miss Sunshine and my goodness... their pain😔 @BBCBreakfast
They told me how their girl had gone to hospital in Sheffield for a routine eye operation & died
They told me she never ate while she was there
They told me they knew she was dying but no one listened
And then I received a letter... @BBCBreakfast
The letter was from Laura’s old physician @Samhja
He made sure his last patient on the day he retired was Laura
He was so fond of her and she adored him
A year later he visited her in hospital & knew things were v v wrong @BBCBreakfast
My heart breaks for Ken & Patricia
They’re wiping away tears as they hear the findings of daughters inquest
“gross failure of care”
Malnutrition DID contribute to Laura’s death
No evidence fed in hospital
Original assessment she died of natural causes NOT adequate @BBCBreakfast
@BBCBreakfast Behind them on the video link with the coroner & team from hospital is a huge photo of Laura’s smiling face
Coroner said “there was an overburden and undervalue placed on Laura & Mr & Mrs Booth... I am so sorry it fell to you to pursue this” @BBCBreakfast
“Clinical decisions made for Laura were unlawful”
Laura went into hospital for a routine eye operation
She wasn’t fed
No one took responsibility for the decision to feed Laura
Her parents begged for help
She died @BBCBreakfast
“I don’t think my child will be prioritised when push comes to shove... he’s non verbal, he’s severely disabled. So many reasons to say ‘don’t bother with him’ “
Had so many 💔conversations with parents of children with disabilities today #CoronaOutbreak
Tomo @BBCBreakfast
Parents like @Danwhite1972 who cares 27/7 for his disabled wife & daughter “who’ll step in and help if I’m sick?”
Right now there are 120,000 vacancies in social care
Not enough for the people already in system @BBCBreakfast
Parents like @hillsideliz Liz “I don’t know how he’ll cope when he can’t do the things he loves. When you struggle to make sense of the world & everything changes, the bottom falls out of your world. Change can make him distressed & distress can lead to crisis” @BBCBreakfast
This is Josh. And this is an amazing story about one man’s wish to see an end to homelessness.
From acorns grow mighty oaks! @BBCBreakfast a thread 1/7
.He opened a cafe in Edinburgh with a heart ❤️
You could buy a lunch and “pay it forward” so someone without a home could eat for free 2/7 @BBCBreakfast
Then Pete who sold the Big Issue outside said “hey, I need a job. Any chance?” It went so well Josh said “do you know anyone else who’s homeless and needs a job?” @BBCBreakfast 3/7
