Oregon's SoS is also the Lieutenant Governor - 2nd in line to the highest office in the state.
She also oversees elections and redistricting.
2/?
The Republican in this race is Kim Thatcher, an extremely radical right winger.
Thatcher is the darling of Oregon Firearms Federation, which bills itself as "Oregon's Only No Compromise Gun Rights Organization," ie: to the RIGHT of the NRA.
3/?
OFF has endorsed Thatcher in the 2020 SoS race: "Thatcher has consistently demonstrated a commitment to constitutional liberties and an unflinching dedication to the Second Amendment. Few legislators have sponsored as many pro-gun bills as Kim."
4/?
In 2015, Thatcher proudly proclaimed she "would not comply" with the universal firearm background check law that had just passed the legislature.
Yes, as a lawmaker, Thatcher publicly proclaimed that she would break the law.
5/?
Thatcher has scrubbed most of her extreme posts from social media, but the endorsement of Oregon Firearms Federation tells you all you need to know.
Thatcher is WAY TOO EXTREME to hold the keys to our elections & redistricting. She's out of step with Oregonians.
6/?
Thatcher is trying to present herself as moderate. But she's not. Not even close.
Mere days after Sandy Hook, @NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre took a $70,000 vacation to the Bahamas via private jet, paid for by the "non-profit," which, by the way, enjoys tax-exempt status.
This was in between public appearances where LaPierre aggressively promoted putting guns in schools, a policy that's now proliferating in @GOP-led states under the Trump administration.
2/
The @NRA is a vile organization, perpetrating a scam on its members to juice sales for gun manufacturers and profit off of death & misery. Its longtime ad agency, Ackerman McQueen, is no better. Their mutually assured destruction can't come soon enough.

The thinking that says Biden is the only candidate who can beat Trump is the same thinking that got us Tim Kaine. No shade to Kaine - he seems like a great guy. But you could see the focus-grouped thinking behind that VP choice:
✔️White
✔️Working class
✔️Catholic.
1/
...in other words, Kaine was Biden 2.0. Imagine if Hillary had chosen somebody exciting & unexpected: Julian Castro, Cory Booker, Elizabeth Warren (who was much talked about for VP at the time). Imagine how energized the base would have been if Clinton had been bold.
2/
Safe did not get us Obama. And Biden did not get us Obama. Biden just happened to hitch his wagon to a once in a lifetime star. Now is not the time for the same safe thinking that got us Kaine (& Gore, Kerry & Dukakis.) Now is the time to be bold, brave & unexpected.

THREAD: Amid all the recent conversation about what OR Rep Bill Post intended when he invited a gun extremist group to "Be ready, be there!" at @MomsDemand Advocacy Day, it's important to step back and explain/contextualize a few things:
Post's excuse is that he was just innocently inviting OFF to "debate" @MomsDemand at our #orleg Advocacy Day. This is is disingenuous.
Let's start with a definition: What is Advocacy Day? (Also sometimes called Lobby Day.)
2/
Most issue-based organizations plan Advocacy Days at their state capitols to advocate for their specific issue: Environment, Education, Labor, LGBTQ, Disability Rights, Criminal Justice Reform, Civil Liberties, Reproductive Rights, etc. It's a long-standing practice.
