9/23 marks the anniversary of Marcos' declaration of martial law in 1972. I was not alive at that time but I am aware of the atrocities of the Marcos family - from the torture of many dissidents to the looting of our country's wealth. 1/n
I remember my mother telling me that except for the curfew, life did not change that much for her. I could not wrap my mind around this. Was this because the commoners in the Chinese-Filipino community like her were apolitical? Or was this the case of ignorance being bliss? 2/n
Then I had a chance to learn that two of my uncles were caught violating the curfew. They served a few hours of jail time and had to face the police chief the next day. My uncle was telling me this as though it was a funny story. 3/n
So the two uncles apologized to the police chief and promised not to violate the curfew again. And then they told him that they will treat him some dimsum. I am not sure whether this dimsum thing happened but they were eventually released. 4/n
So after the storytelling, I asked my uncle (who was about 70 yo): would you want to have another government that is as authoritarian as Marcos? And he said YES! I want to roll my eyes in disbelief! He was literally locked up for violating a stupid curfew. 5/n
I guess my takeaway from this is that peoples' voting preferences are truly fascinating. But regardless, #MarcosIsNotAHero#MARCOSMAGNANAKAW 6/6

Hi everyone! I am happy to share this thread about our #IAPHS2020@ia4phs poster presentation in entitled “Whose cigarette smoking behavior is most affected by the Philippine Sin Tax Reform Act?” 1/n
This work is coauthored with @rmlacaza and Miguel Antonio Estrada from the University of the Philippines @Official_UPD. I have been nagging Miguel to be on twitter because he is missing out on a lot of cool stuff here. 😅 2/n
Anyway, our study aims to examine how individual, social support, and community or societal-level factors determine whether Filipino smokers are affected by the 2012 cigarette price increase and how affected smokers changed their smoking behavior. 3/n
My experience of getting urgent care in the US: A thread. Summary of what I learned: 1. Allergies are no joke. 2. Worrying about outrageous healthcare costs is legit. I spent at least one hour waiting for my symptoms to subside so that I won't have to go to the hospital. 1/X
After dinner last night, I felt bloated and had stomach cramps so I thought of taking Alka-Seltzer Extra Strength. Soon after, I developed itchiness. I thought it is just one of those seasonal allergies so I took Loratidine, hoping it will go away. 2/X
But the itchiness worsened. I was developing hives. My body started to become red as though I drank gallons of alcohol. Then I felt that my face was swollen too. I had difficulty breathing. I thought shit this is serious. 3/X
