A simple SEO case study ...

We knew that demand for spas with outdoor pools and hot tubs peaked in Summer

And our cleint @SpaSeekers didnt even rank on the 1st page for these terms. They now rank 1st and 2nd. This is how... Image
Treatwell took no.1 position with a blog post covering "Top 10 spas with outdoor pools". The blog post had no quality links to this piece, just internal links and a listicle piece which couldnt be too difficult to beat.

The strategy...
1. Create a commercial landing page listing all spas available with an outdoor pool or hot tub
2. Create a blog post listing the top 10 spas from that list - with internal links to the commercial landing page and vice versa
3. Get links to the site surrounding hot tubs...
1. spaseekers.com/spas-outdoor-p…
2. spaseekers.com/spa-insider/de…
(We built 174 links into this blog post)
3. PLUS....
3. The Dream Summer job - a dream job ad to become a hot tub tester. You got paid £500 to visit spas and test out infinity pools. Campaign sat on the blog and landed 169 links spaseekers.com/spa-insider/dr… Image
Note - we didnt build links directly into the commercial page. The internal links from the campaign pages/blog post passed the value. Google "Spas with outdoor pools" or "spas with outdoor hot tubs" and SpaSeekers take both 1st and 2nd positions.
This was simple - content + links

Want an example of EEAT on steroids and how links into author pages are contributing?

Well for “your money or your life” categories, we’re focused on authors right now and giving signals to Google and users that those giving out the tips, advice are in fact experts. Here’s how… twitter.com/i/web/status/1… Image
Health line - leading site for medical and health news. Of course, has to be providing accurate, expert advice and provide clear evidence of authority. How do they do that?

Multiple authors. The marketing team or CEO didn’t write this piece of content, Janet , Amy and Rachael… twitter.com/i/web/status/1… Image
Notice how Amy and Rachel wrote the article but Janet medically reviewed, that is a signal to Google that this is the best piece of medical advice on the web, it’s been written by experts and checked by professionals too.

However, are Google and users stupid enough to just take… twitter.com/i/web/status/1… Image

Im a journalist and editor on most media databases, which means - those who are not checking who they’re sending their releases to … I get 10-15 other agencies press releases every week!

Before you scramble to your sent box to check, 🙊heres what most agencies are doing wrong:
👉🏼 you’re looking like an SEO agency.

Journalists are clued up to what your goal is now (link vs brand etc) and they’re hesitant to give links unless you give them value or reason to do so.

Stop asking for links 5 times in a release and looking like an SEO agency, and start
Creating stories and content worth linking to

👉🏼 so many I read just don’t have relevance to the brand. It’s still happening where the stories I’m reading have very little connection to the brand probably making it hard to get pick up or look trust worthy. Include a sentence

SEOs obsession with links, means brands aren’t creating marketing that people love.Just getting a link

If you’re a creative in SEO, here’s how to think about it

Step 1-what stories can we tell that makes users love this brand and search for this us when it comes to our products
Step 2 - what can we put on-site that is either useful, resourceful, engaging or just fun that can earn the links

Step 3 - what’s the CTA. How do we get them to come back, even if it’s not now , but in 6 months time.

Step 4 - how can we do that consistently so brands and
Google trust us when it comes to our product

Don’t lose creativity at the expense of links. Google ranks the best result for a search term. Instead of manipulating google to think you are the best result, just get your customers to tell google instead

Recently I had to be honest with a client that got in touch.

They were looking for an agency and had several proposals for SEO, content and PR all being told they needed links and invest most budget there.

They didn't need links at scale, they needed a small handful to specific
areas but what they needed is fucking good content, and to sort their site speed. These are two areas pulling the site down. They were facing a fast decline in traffic every single month and cant rely on paid anymore to deliver the ROI they were looking for.
Google was penalising them for poor content and lack of internal linking structure. There content held very little authority and therefore got little traffic.

Some of there best content was 5 years old, no updates but thats all Google had to play with.
